Early Access Review
First game I ever thought was worth a recommendation on Steam.
Miles and away better than anything Project CARS ever did, and with a dev that keeps pushing for development month in, month out. Open wheelers are to die for. GT ain't half bad, either.

Without any competition, Verdun is the best and only WWI shooter on the market.
But it has legs and will probably stand up to whatever may come in the future.

Remember that wall of a difficulty curve in Red Orchestra (a comparably realistic shooter experience)?
That doesn't happen here.
Sure, you have it tough in the beginning, but after you get to grips with a few of the maps and realise that you need to keep your noggin down, you end up pulling your weight pretty fast.

It's got a good amount of maps, a varied series of tactics to be employed in conquering trenches, some working better than others depending upon the map, and you have every chance of killing a level 100 vet even as a level 1 grunt.

Le good:

The attention to detail is amazing.
Squadding up with friends is a blast and a half, it really gets you into the moment.
There's variety in weapons/roles/squads.
The weapons feel satisfying.
Graphic representations of every projectile that flies around lets you see mortar shots incoming, muzzle flashes, bullet trajectories.

Le bad:

Takes a while to get used to targetting, especially in close combat.
Mesh issues still pop up once in a while, prompting you to get stuck in texture.
A few bugs still arise and cause you to teleport 50 metres across the map with little to no warning.

All in all, the bad things about this game are mostly technical issues, which are slowly but surely being taken care of by the devs who are pouring their heart into this.

If you want a realistic, historical, atmospheric, tense shooter that tackles The Great War, this one's for you.
And if people give you flak about it feeling contrived because you get executed for deserting, they probably know ♥♥♥♥ all about WWI - don't mind 'em, send 'em back to school and get 'em to brush up on their history.

This is the best and most realistic depiction of a war in a game, shooter or otherwise.

P.S. alright, alright, there's no friendly fire. Sorry. Deal with it, eh?

It's a good thing that playing as a dinosaur is so satisfying because gunplay is really bad and doesn't pack quite the punch you'd expect from a shotgun for example. And don't even get me started on the Commando "bro".

But when you are lunging and stalking and charging and chomping down on humans, this game truly shines.

Get some friends in on it so that you can all go "Clever girl..." every 2 minutes or so.
