I initially wrote a review where I said that the crashes were far too frequent and that I couldn't recommend the game because of that. Now, after several patches, I haven't experienced any crashes in the last few sessions, so I'll review the game once again.

I love this game. Aside from the nostalgia factor, which in my case is significant, this game is definitely worth playing over 20 years later. It's much harder than future Sims games. It's also quirkier and full of little surprises. I do really enjoy the challenge and the sitcom-like qualities of this game. I think my favorite part of the game is the sound design. The music is just legendary.

Proteus is sort of an open-world exploration game in a cute pastel, pixely environment. While there is a goal, you'll probably discover it accidentally and understand what to do, but for me the main enjoyment of the game comes from getting to know the landscape and its inhabitants. There are stylistic versions of chickens, frogs, and other animals that make me grin when I see them. The weather changes, from a sunny day to rainy even to nighttime.

Overall, it's a wonderful game to play when you're stressed and need relaxation, or just need to unwind in general. It's a great game for just slowing things down, and the music is wonderful as well.

The only problem that I have with the game is that my computer won't run the full version (not sure why--it's a decent computer), so I have to play one of the beta versions on Steam. I have played the full version offline on other computers.

To me, this isn't one of those games that I just sit down and play anytime (it's usually when I want to de-stress), but it's well worth it to buy. I'd give it an 8/10, but you should only buy it if you're interested in this sort of game.
