Jesus christ this game has been an absolutely wild ride over the last 10(!) years. Fourth edit, current as of Patch 6.51.

1.0: I saw that trainwreck coming in Beta and steered clear of it.

ARR/2.0: Gave it a try, pleasantly surprised. Story was unstable because they weren't sure they had another flop on their hands or not, so it kinda sucks until the lv40-50 MSQ. Patch 5.3 recently streamlined ARR's questline so that you no longer need to grind side quests almost at all to get through it, and made gearing much easier via dungeon drop overhauls so you'll never be using a weak weapon or too-old gear anymore. Still a bit of a slog, but much improved. Also you can now flyin ARR zones after you finish the 2.0 main quest(pre-2.1 so you can fly for the remainder before HW)

Heavensward/3.0: Added flight and cleaned classes up, much improved story once they saw the game wasn't a flop and starts building up well. The Free Trial now allows you to play until Lv60 and complete Heavensward entirely, too, no time limit even if you hit 60 and beat HW.

Stormblood/4.0: Lyse is full of crap and the story wouldn't be any different without her. Most of the Ala Mhigo parts are boring, frankly. But the Doma parts of the story are great. Best part of this expansion was the 8man raids though - Deltascape (FF5 bosses + Exdeath), Sigmascape (FF6 Phantom Train, Chupon, the Haunted Painting and frickin' Kefka himself), and the Alphascape, with little Alpha from Chocobo Dungeons himself helping us out.

Shadowbringers/5.0: Easily. The. Best. FF Story. In over a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Decade. The pacing is great. The characters are well done. The lore bombs, jesus christ the lore bombs from Emet-Selch fill in so much backstory of the Ascians. I will openly admit I cried at multiple parts it was so good at just getting you -into- it. Chills, man. I will always Remember. 5.3's wasn't near as Epic a conclusion as 5.0 was, but a certain guest appearance during the final fight made it hard to Tank through teary eyes.

Endwalker/6.0: Doesn't quite live up to the story of Shadowbringers, but still a solid entry and above Stormblood easily. Ties up many loose ends, great tear-jerker ending, and the 6.x story dealt with the Thirteenth nicely.

Dawntrail/7.0: With the Ascian/Ancient story wrapped up in 6.0, I feel like Dawntrail is going to be another ARR or Stormblood in terms of story quality. Not that great, just kinda moving the story to where it needs to be. Will update this section (probably the next Steam Awards that requires an updated review for badge progress, lol) with how it turns out.

The Free Trial just got updated to include Stormblood and has no time limit, so you got nothin to lose by trying. Just be warned that, while there IS "end game content/raiding", it is NOT the focus of this MMO. You WILL take breaks once you get to the end. And that's okay. They encourage this, even. But it's always a fond homecoming each update. Totally worth it.

Had to Edit this review due to massive changes in the game since it was written. Prior to this, it was 57 of 67 Helpful, and I recommended it.

However, due to these changes, I can no longer recommend this trainwreck of a game.

It seemed like they made such good decisions with the initial steam release. Class fixes/overhauls to make them useful and fun again, removal of most of the "pay to even play let alone win" mechanics.

But then they redid a number of classes, again. Including my beloved Zookeeper Osa. What once was the only class I genuinely enjoyed, with a stable full of pets I could summon 3 or 4 pets at once with, has been transformed into a shadow of it's former self with only a single pet allowed, some stupid new buff/energy system, and all my previous skills (and thus my gear) being rendered mostly useless.

This is on top of the LOOOOOOOOONG-awaited "Hero" system turning out to be complete ♥♥♥♥. Everyone was expecting this new system that let you use Alt chars on the same account as Sidekicks/Party Members, since previously, everyone had multiple accounts anyways with alts in their party - so we figured, "Cool, they're going to implement a system to make this official and easier on both us and the servers."

WRONG. The Hero system is a monthly subscription, which costs more per-char you want to add, and highly overpriced. People were waiting for this to come out and be the game-saver, what made the community skyrocket, instead, people quit in droves, major cities that once had dozens or hundreds of shop bags out are now empty, and the pop has dropped outside of the French servers.

They also took the main neutral gathering point, the Temple in Astrub, and literally deleted the entire area where everyone had their shop bags and socialized and had duels at, so there's no room to do anything social there anymore. The developers. actively. removed. socialization. On purpose.

What was once a good, fun little game has been destroyed by terrible decisions. RIP Wakfu.

So far, I'm quite pleased with the state this is in, in Alpha. I was an avid Minecraft player though less on the "elaborate builds" and more on the "exploration and live in a hollowed out cave" side, so initially this is pretty good for indulging your Exploratory side, and building looks customizable enough that it'll be a decent-sized learning curve vs simple blocks/pixel recreation; ergo, it'll be more in-depth and nice looking than Blocky builds would, but also harder to tweak just right than simply slapping one block/lego onto another in some cases.

It is an Alpha though at the time of this review, so there's some minor bugs/issues; movement can be wonky sometimes(it was worse, but they actually made it better in a recent update), I had a quest to escort an npc to a place and had to kill 3 monsters at the location, but they spawned underground or something and, while still being marked on my map, weren't killable, breaking the quest. The NPC went ahead and acted like I'd beaten them, but since I hadn't, couldn't complete. This was in Story Mode, though, and will likely be fixed at the rate they work.

Server-based Multiplayer is available, though still finicky in it's current iteration. I tried to create a game with a friend and it simply wasn't showing up in the list, and vice versa. I assume/hope that they'll be working on that and making hosting & joining a little easier for the average joe to do without having to learn to set up "actual" servers for small-numbers co-op play with a friend or two.

TL;DR: If you like Survival/Exploration/Building games a la Minecraft, Terraria, or even similar to Everquest Landmark, with a solid single player experience as well as Multiplayer options, this is worth a shot for ya. I'm eager to see where it goes as it progresses into a more stable Beta and eventual Launch.

If you've ever heard of or played Dwarf Fortress, this game VERY faithfully recreates it in most aspects. At the time of this review it's not quite as deep as Dwarf Fortress is, but considering DF is 6-10 years old and this is still relatively new, and with how often the Developers seem to update & actually pay attention to this game to make it work unlike alot of other Early Access/Greenlight abusers, your money is well spent if you enjoy this type of game. I'm very eager to see if it can rival DF but with these much nicer(read: any) graphics and a MUCH more User-Friendly interface with full mouse support.
