Here's the entire script of parley between Cao Cao and Yuan Shao at Guandu in English because why not:

Cao Cao: Heheheh! Brother Benchu, I trust you've been well?
Yuan Shao: Thank you for your kind thoughts, Mengde. Each day treats me better than the last; with each passing year we thrive more and more.
Cao Cao: Heheheheh! *sweeps Yuan Shao's chair with his sleeves* Brother Benchu, go ahead.
Yuan Shao: Aren't you the prime minister of the nation? Why be so deferential?
Cao Cao: Heheheheh! They all say that I am the prime minister in name, but the prime traitor in reality. Heheh. Brother Benchu, as my elder you are entitled to primacy. Have a seat!
Yuan Shao: Thank you, then.

(They sit dramatically.)

Cao Cao: Hehehe! Our relationship really goes way, way back. Since we were children we were best pals. I still remember the days when you brought us all around Luoyang to play. In the day we'd bring out the hawks to hunt, and at night we'd party and have fun. What happy days those were! Hehehe! Sometimes I think, wouldn't it be nice if people don't ever have to grow up?
Yuan Shao: Mengde, you are pretty thick-skinned to still talk about those embarrassing things.
Cao Cao: A man must not forget his beginnings. Just because we are both important officers of the court and pillars of the state doesn't mean we should cover up embarrassing things from our past. As the saying goes, there is no mortal who has not erred.
Yuan Shao: Mengde, I'm not here to reminisce with you. If you have something to say, hurry and say it. The men in my ranks are already getting restless.
Cao Cao: Hahahahah! *exhales* How should I put it? *dramatic music enters* Good brother, you have come with an army of 700,000 to attack me. It is a wise move indeed. You are right to do so.
Yuan Shao: *chuckles* Why do you say that?
Cao Cao: Because, if this battle is delayed for another five years, you are certain to be defeated, and I am certain to win. Now, though... I am not your match.
Yuan Shao: Hahahahahah! I realized that long ago. How could I wait another five years?
Cao Cao: *exhales*
Yuan Shao: Oh, Mengde, since you know that the outcome of this battle is already decided, you might as well surrender to me now. Spare those tens of thousands under your banner from having to follow you to the grave.
Cao Cao: *interrupts* But you know what I'm like. I'd rather die than surrender.
Yuan Shao: *gets angry and stands up* Then why are we wasting our time?
Cao Cao: Hey, good brother, good brother! Even though I am unwilling to surrender, I am willing to sue for peace with you.
Yuan Shao: *asks curiously* Sue for peace?
Cao Cao: Or maybe I should say plead for peace? Beg for peace? Whatever you like.
Yuan Shao: *calling him by his childhood name to either insult or due to their past* Cao Ahman, oh, Cao Ahman, your glib tongue alone cannot trick me into withdrawing.
Cao Cao: Hmmmm... I wouldn't dare to trick you. In sooth, I am suing for peace. Good brother. If you are willing to withdraw right now, I am willing to give up the six commanderies of Xu Province, leaving only Yan Province for myself. Moreover, I swear I will never vie with you for hegemony.
Yuan Shao: *caresses his beard* Is that said in earnest?
Cao Cao: In order to prove my sincerity, I've brought along a pledge for my entreaty. Please take a look. *points to is army* See that?

(Camera shows Emperor Liu Xie.)

Yuan Shao: Really, the pledge for your entreaty is the emperor of the Han himself?
Cao Cao: Is he not enough? Could he not be the object of your longing, good brother? If you withdraw now, please take the emperor with you. From today onward, the court will be housed in Jizhou. And the one to use the emperor to coerce the lords will be you, the great General Yuan. The emperor is nothing but a burden in my hands *he complains*, because you are stronger than me, and you will campaign against me. However, when the emperor is in your hands, no one will dare attack you. To put it bluntly, how will that be different from you being the emperor yourself? And you won't have to worry about being labeled a usurper either! Good brother, even if you are not ready to ascend the throne just yet, at any point from now on you can still simply remove him and declare yourself emperor.

(Yuan Shao takes a serious look at the emperor as the young emperor cries in silent.)

Cao Cao: What do you think?
Yuan Shao: To sue for peace, it is not sufficient for you to hand over the emperor. You must cede the city of Xuchang as well.
Cao Cao: Xuchang is my capital. If I cede Xuchang, where would you have me call home?
Yuan Shao: Don't you still have another five commanderies of Yan Province? That's enough to be your power base.
Cao Cao: *whines* Yan? The province is small. The people are few. I wouldn't be able to support my army. It'll be hard enough to keep myself safe there, let alone building a power base! My good brother, I've already agreed to ceding Xu Province. I've also added the emperor to the deal. Do give me some breathing space, please?
Yuan Shao: Every time you go on a campaign you field your army at Xuchang. Worthy brother, if you are unwilling to give up Xuchang how am I supposed to believe your sincerity?
Cao Cao: *tsk* If I give up Xuchang, my officers will all think that I'm a coward and a second-rate leader. They're going to mutiny and take my place! And in case I die, who's going to maintain this truce? And if one day they decide to field an army against you, wouldn't that be quite a nuisance to you?

(Cao Cao looks at the sun.)

Cao Cao: Come, let's have some tea.

(They both holds tea as well as Yuan Shao looks at the bright sun wondering why he did so.)

Cao Cao: *raising his cup of tea* Come.

(They drink the tea as time passes. Yuan Shao's advisors and generals gets worried and impatient. Soon after a dozen maids walks towards them holding serving trays.)

Yuan Shao: What are they doing here?
Cao Cao: Hmm? Ah!
Yuan Shao: *pointing to them with anger* What are they doing here?
Cao Cao: Brother, these are all maids from the palace, bringing wine that emperor grants his warriors. Good brother, the emperor has nothing but appreciation for you. He wishes so much to beat swords into plowshares, so that we may both return in triumph.
Yuan Shao: *stands up and puts his hands together in front of him as he stands up and shouts out loud to the emperor* Your servant thanks his liege.
Cao Cao: *stands up while holding a cup of wine* Good brother, whether or not we end up fighting or making peace, as enemies or friends, let's drink a cup together, hmm?
Yuan Shao: *gets his cup of wine*
Cao Cao: Cheers.

(Yuan Shao drinks only after Cao Cao.)

Cao Cao: Heheheheheh! Sit down, sit down, Brother.

(Cao Cao looks at the sun, again, but this time a smile appears on his face.)

Yuan Shao: After you cede Xuchang, I promise I will never raise arms against you ever again. On top of that, I will petition the emperor to make you Regent-General and Protector of Yan Province. You'll enjoy endless wealth and honor to the end of your days.

Cao Cao: Hmm? Thank you for your magnanimity, Brother.

(Cao Cao changes the way of sitting, now he is sitting like a superior and showing disrespect to Yuan Shao.)

Cao Cao: *chuckles* Yuan Shao, if I were you, I would never agree to a truce with Cao Mengde. I'd only build a great tomb of marble for him. That's because, for as long as there's breath in him, Cao Mengde will never be defeated in battle! Hahahahahahah! *eyes yum* Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah! *runs away* Hahahahah!

@Jalak and others who want to know the point of it all, Cao Cao was waiting for two things. First he was repositioning his cavalry to flank. More importantly, though, he was waiting for the sun to be in the eyes of the enemy army so his would have an advantage. In that scene, that was considered to be the deciding factor in the battle.

That scene was amazing though even if the rest of the show didn't do a great job with the 3k. The guy who portrayed Cao Cao was on fucking point.

@Jalak Glad you asked! Spoiler from Three Kingdoms (2010):
He was waiting for the right position of sun to glare so his army could rain down arrows as a surprise attack. Ez win ez life for Team Cao Cao!

For those of us that haven't seen the Three Kingdoms or read about this particular part of Chinese history, what just happened there at the end? Was Cao Cao waiting for something, or was he just making fun of Yuan Shao, and how?
