no spoilers for the story, but i touch on the gameplay !!!

it held me to the credits. but for the most part, it generally was not very fun.

the good stuff

the art is pretty good! i thought the character designs were pretty cute, and i did find myself sometimes chuckling at some of the enemy designs. i think the art style fits the game pretty well, and it's honestly hard to think of any other art style fitting better.

the music is also a nice addition. every track felt like it fit, and there is no shortage of banger tracks that are still pretty fun to listen to outside of the game. good stuff.

and now the bad stuff

it is immediately clear from the get-go that this game is not gameplay oriented, as the gameplay is mostly just very stock rpg combat with a very barebones "emotion" system (which is interesting for a couple hours but is very simplistic and doesn't add much gameplay depth). while somewhat interesting for the early parts of the game, the emotion system basically boils down to doing the same high-damage routine on every single enemy with very little variety. the enemies are also generally somewhat forgettable, as you can pretty much mow through every single enemy without much thought. and despite me enjoying some of the moment to moment character designs, every single enemy's attack patterns are basically identical. i'm very unconfident that i can remember more than 5 enemies off the top of my head.

the story is somewhat enticing, but it didn't really do much for me. in my opinion, it felt somewhat shallow for most of the game, as much of the context behind vague metaphors thrown at the player is only explained after considerable amounts of generally pretty boring gameplay. it's fun for the first couple hours to be somewhat in the dark for where the story is going, but the fatigue of sitting through the gameplay just for a sprinkle of story explanation starts to become draining.

this game is tagged with psychological horror, so i might as well go over it... it's ok? i am by no means a horror veteran... this was one of the only psychological horror games i've played. with that being said, it wasn't very scary to me. it often felt like the scariest parts were just shock factor and mild gore. it wasn't anything that i'm staying awake afraid of at night by any means, which can be a plus if you're not into that sort of stuff. but don't go into this game expecting a good scare.

overall, one word to describe this game is disappointing. at least for me, it wasn't the insanely memorable story-driven experience that many people hype it up to be. if you're on the fence about it, i would not recommend it. watching a walkthrough on youtube will probably give you the same fulfillment as playing it anyways, as the game gets borderline tedious at many points.

as a person who thoroughly enjoyed transistor and hades, gameplay during rites is definitely lacking
however, i think this game is actually incredibly well designed and intentional, even if rites can get clunky
story is very solid and art is beautiful, but that's a given from supergiant at this point
