The best sonic game since Sonic 3 & Knuckles. In fact, it's probably better.

This game sucks. It's not even a game. It's just you walking around until you stick to the linear path, and listen to some cryptic dialogue. Granted, the caves looked cool, but if I wanted an experience like this, I would just go hiking.

Buggy as hell, but great if you can look past that. Great atmosphere, good pacing, and a nice story. However, there are 2 major problems worth addressing.

1. There is a point in the game where you will be on a ship fighting mosnters and blasting a cannon. On some computers (in this case mine), there is a bug that will get you stuck on that level. Luckily, I believe someone has a download file that has a save state to take you past this point.

2. The last level. God almighty, it's ridiculously and unfairly difficult. I'm not talking about the final boss, I'm talking about escaping the level by running to the exit as the place is falling apart. I tried this at least 20 times, maybe even more, and failed every time. I was always 1-2 seconds too late from getting to the end. I looked up online videos to see what I was doing wrong, and I was doing nothing wrong. You just have to luck out on running at just the right speed, jumping at just the right time, round the corners in just the right way, before you can successfully make it to the end. Since I couldn't do it, I just let youtube show me the ending.

Despite all that, the game is worth playing if you like Lovecraft, especially The Shadow over Innsmouth.

I have played the first 2 games a bit, but never the whole way through, most likely because it was on console and I didn't play with team mates. So I'm not completely familiar with the story and the lore, primarily with the guy who becomes the villain in this game. That said, the game will provide a fun FPS RPG shoot-em-up experience that will last a solid 20 hours assuming you do a few side-quests here and there. Game will last longer if you try to go for all the side-quests, and play through it more than once for the sake of maxing out your character. Personally, I thought most of the side-quests were pointless and that the game was only worth playing through once. But it was a fun 20 hour one-time play through. Storyline isn't half bad either.

The gameplay isn't bad, but the combat gets repetetive after a while, and the storyline doesn't have a great payoff at the end.

One of the few shooters I keep coming back to over and over again. I prefer the capture point maps, where there's an attacking team and a defending team. My character of choice is the engineer.

Scary as hell, ranks up there with Resident Evil 2 and Slender as one of the scariest games of all time. The game is well paced, for the most part, and it doesn't overuse placing the player in scare mode. The timing of the music has to be commended as well, along with the jump scares.

That being said, there are times when you might get killed for cheap reasons, especially on the harder levels of difficulty. Using the motion tracker to determine when you should move beneath an open vent, or move at all, does help. But there will come times when you have to take a chance and move when the enemy is nearby, because there are some rooms/levels where the enemy will always search near where you hide. You will spend a decent portion of the game moving, hiding when you detect a threat (either with motion scanner, by sight, or by sound), rinse and repeat, save for a few moments when you craft a weapon to use on some robot Joes. The cheap kills done on you are not that big of a deal on easy mode, maybe even on normal mode. But on Hard mode and Nightmare, it can get unfair and ridiculous at times.

Hiding doesn't always work, especially on higher difficulties. On those levels, when you are in a locker or other hiding spot, the alien won't just slowly walk past you. If it senses you hiding in their (and it almost always does on Nightmare mode), it will lean in close to see if you are there. You will then have to press a couple buttons to lean back and hold your breath. The longer you hold your breath, the more health you lose. Hold it too long, and you will gasp for air, and then the alien will hear you, open the door, and kill you. So you will be forced to quickly but stealthily maneuver around the hallways and rooms as best as you can, and only use hiding spots when absolutely necessary.

That being said, I played through the game twice, once on easy (14 hours), once on Nightmare (13 hours). Yes, I beat the game on Nightmare mode, and thought the game was worth playing twice.

One last note about Nightmare mode. You are going to need health kits and pipe bombs, and maybe one EMP. And try to save your ammunition for the Joes, except the flamethrower because that weapon is the only thing you'll have to save you against the alien, and flames don't do squat against Joes. I never had to use any other crafting item on that level of difficulty. Be bery careful with what you craft, because crafting materials are very hard to come by on Nightmare mode. And try not to use the flamethrower. While handy, it burns through ammunition very fast on Nightmare mode. But there is a neat trick with the flamethrower. As I ran for an elevator, with the alien charging after me, I pointed the weapon at the alien ready to blast it. But the alien stopped. It flinched, knowing that the flames burn and it doesn't want to get hit by them. It's a very useful bluff tactic to use if you are low on ammo to keep the alien away for just another couple seconds, just the amount of time needed to get that elevator going.

Brilliant emmersion. A true survival horror gem in an era where most AAA survival horror games get that aspect so wrong (ala Dead Space).
