How did I enjoy this so much on its release?

Combining beautiful graphics with semi-realistic gameplay, you are put in the middle of a 8.5/10 action movie, and will think you could have joined the Marines.
This game is a reminder war is only cool in fiction.
I WISH IT HAD MORE PEOPLE PLAYING THIS GAME IS GENUINELY A GEM

P.S I don't know why this game attracts so many racists?

This game is dog crap and I mean I don't know how it was on the original xbox version but the pc version is a mess. filled with bugs, bad save options, and barely playable. terrible. Are people blinded with nostalgia when they recommend this, or was it actually playable back in the day?

Update (9.11.2024):
After finally revisiting the game and finishing it, my opinion hasn't changed almost at all.

I'll start by saying the writing is phenomenal! I mean, the characters are so fascinating and make me want to know more about them, even sympathize with some.
The psychopaths caught my attention especially, which are the true star antagonists for all I care.

As I'd watched them reject the new reality of the zombie outbreak and become so invested in their work, I couldn't help but wonder what kind of people they were before they went nuts.

IF THIS GAME IS WORTH ANYTHING, it would be in the characters and story.

The difficulty is insanely absurd.
You'd go and tell me that the game is just supposed to be hard, when in reality I don't mind difficulty.
But instead of being a challenging game, the people who recommend to play this ignore an important problem with certain mechanics, and avoid admitting the game is ass by calling it HARD.

I DON'T WANT TO DIE, JUST TO RUN FOR THREE MINUTES AND TRY TO GET TO THE SAME BORING OBJECTIVE I JUST DID WITHOUT GETTING HIT TOO MUCH.

It's repetitive, and tiring. It has NO REAL purpose, and it's not FUN HARD. It's just painfully irritating!
Nothing, but nothing would have hurt them to give the option of manual saving through the pause menu, or just normal checkpoints to each mission.

It saves time, and it makes sure you don't play the saaame boring large portions of the game. LET US SKIP THAT PAIN.

AND WHAT THE ♥♥♥♥ IS UP WITH THE BOSS FIGHTS, HUH?
From Carlito's missions, to the psychopaths, to the final boss Brock, which btw I used an exploit just so I could actually beat him, THE BOSS MISSIONS ARE SOOO ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ BAD

In some missions I found myself chasing a boss like a jackhole desperately hitting them with my pistols which might as well be NERF GUNS, as they put me to the ground just to hit me multiple times more before I get to even move my character.

Maybe apart from Adam, it never felt like I had a MOMENT to attack them, it was all messy and buggy-feeling and I felt like I almost always used some kind of buggy exploitation to beat them

In short, lazy overpowered boss fights. felt so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ soulless.

I'll be clear one more time!
The writing is fun.
But the gameplay is achingly repetitive without justification, hard for false reasons, and when interesting fights are finally happening, I'm getting destroyed by bosses with perfect aim and zero reaction to any sort of damage.

The game where your friends are more dangerous than the monsters.

This game is ♥♥♥♥ but you get a sword

I shut down the visual novel and I must have gotten used to seeing only red and black because everything seems so bright.
Overall, I enjoyed this brief trip, and recommend anyone to try it even if they never read a visual novel.
