As someone who skateboards in real life, every motion makes sense, and holds true to reality. If you understand skating already, you can pick this up very quickly.

You are able to change many options that will change the gameplay completely to make it easier or harder. Essentially, you can play with the same controls from the Skate games, or use the hardcore settings where you must flick and catch the board correctly. Skater XL seems to have more exposure, but they certainly are not on the same level as session. Both are good games, but Session is an actual skateboarding sim and has much more of a free roam aspect.
