For new players, I recommend playing Hitman to completion once using "opportunities" to guide you. This 5-6 hour experience will introduce you to many of the stealth mechanics in the game and help you get used to the spaces and characters in play. Though the story is intriguing enough, Hitman shines most when players embrace the emergent gameplay potential of its clockwork worlds. So, aftewards, you'll want to return to the various international settings to complete challenges, escalation missions, and elusive targets--or you can just create chaos by toying with the games mechanics. If you find the game a little easy, you can also disable various help systems and UI to make it tougher on yourself.

For the most part, the game controls well, though Agent 57 can move a little stiffly at times and is certainly not as spry as other video game assassins I could name. You won't be scaling any tall buildings, certainly, and even sneaking around can sometimes be more challenging than necessary. That said, there's nothing more satisfying than sneaking up on an unsuspecting NPC and introducing them to the toilet basin. Once you've got a sense of how the game works, you'll find yourself murdering targets (and non-targets, if you like) with relative ease. In fact, you'll start to look at the worlds as a series of opportunities to rub them out in the most creative ways you can.

There are a few technical issues. Load times on PC are occasionally long enough that they break the flow of the game, and I've had the repeated experience of being dropped from the online service for no good reason, which actually forces you back to the main menu. This is a frustrating experience, and I'm not surprised so many other reviewers respond so negatively here, but don't let it stop you from playing one of the best games of 2016. The frame rate can also drop on occasion, especially in crowded spaces, though it shouldn't be a problem for gamers with better hardware than me.

Some hitches aside though, Hitman is a great entry for the series, and a game that will continue to evolve as the developers add new missions and elusive targets as well as a new narrative in Season 2. It's an achievement in episodic gaming and definitely worth a purchase, especially at a discounted price.
