My experience

• Game takes about a minute to load shaders, does not save them
• I can't customise my weapon, need about 500+ hours of grind to make a decent loadout
• Meta weapons require a high level
• After an update and trying to load into match, game hangs, and I have to use Task Manager to close the game.
• This problem was not a one off

Don't waste your time or buy anything.

Played Half-Life and want a little more? Play this!

Half-Life: Opposing Force is an amazing game that is seriously worth trying out despite many arguments on whether it is canon or not. So, what's it like?

Story

I'll explain the start. This game isn't so much about story, but it compensates for this with good gameplay.

You are Corporal Adrian Shephard, sent to deal with the awful Black Mesa incident. Suddenly, you see a strange aircraft fly by. Are those aliens?

Your helicopter gets damaged (womp womp) and you and your squadmates are going down! And then you're unconscious.

You wake up in a strange room. Welcome to Black Mesa.

Gameplay

Expect to see new friendlies, new enemies, and new weapons. Additional gameplay mechanics also exist to compliment this.

Look Gordon, ropes! They're actually ropes this time! Jump right into them, whether they're actually ropes or wires without electricity, you occasionally use these to traverse Black Mesa in any direction of your choice. Because of these new mechanics and new weapons, I'd recommend getting down to the bootcamp for training on your new weapons, mechanics, and tactics!

Length

This game took me somewhere around maybe 6.5 hours. However, that includes the tons of times of died to some difficult parts, as well as time spent assessing threats and solving puzzles.

Pricing

For a game near the length of Half-Life, and packed with so much content alongside other things, this game is an absolute steal for the price it is!

Conclusion / TL;DR

Story: Lacking a little.

Gameplay: Compensates a lack of a story, as well as adding SO MUCH CONTENT WOOOOO!

Length: Around the same as Half-Life 1. Decent.

Pricing: Surprised this isn't priced higher considering how good it is.

Worth it: It's so good you should buy it NOW!

So picture this, you're me, and you're peacefully building a satellite to head down to the bottom of the 'Abyss' map and then head back up again.

After some time spent trying to engineer it into working, it lands for the first time. You hear a creepy noise suddenly.

Now, depending on what type of person you are, this could be perfectly fine. Ambience for a somewhat mysterious game can't be scary, right?

Or you can be like me, "♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥ NO NO ♥♥♥♥ NO ♥♥♥♥ THIS I'M OUT ♥♥♥♥ YOU GAME."

Okay, now for the actual review.

Gameplay

The gameplay mostly focuses on building, and experimenting. The game takes place in a few labs of your choosing. Would it be nice to build a satellite that can get to the bottom of the abyss and get back up again , or would it be better to build a boat that could survive harsh waters? (the water in this game isn't harsh but I'm just trying to make this sound interesting gjkwssrgkljsgkjgsd)

If you love building stuff and killing stuff too, then this is the game for you!

Lore

The game doesn't really have too much in terms of lore. To clarify on this, you may find some lore if you dig deep into the game and find some secrets, but other than that, there isn't really lore. It's a game about killing and building.

Workshop

You can reenact WW2 or maybe have humans fighting against aliens. There's so much content on the workshop, tanks, cars, mods, etc! The developer doesn't need to keep the game alive because the players do it!

(the above statement may not be 100% true)

Conclusion

Although this is a rather quick review, this game is PACKED with content, there's plenty of mods, and plenty of stuff you can do.
Build stuff, kill stuff. Reenact a specific event from 2001 if you want to. It's people playground. "Do whatever the ♥♥♥♥ you want lmao" describes this game easily.

Includes a TL;DR!

I've played an hour and 1/2 of this game. I don't recommend it, however. This is because of the game's lack of quality. In this review, I will point out my many issues with the game.

Puzzles

What is Half-Life known for other than combat? Puzzles. Puzzles give you a break from the combat and allow you to think for a minute to solve an issue. However, some of the puzzles in the game are confusing, mainly due to the fact that they are distanced from what you just did a second ago.

Now, an APC appears on the road after I patch up and refuel a truck's fuel tank. My natural reaction? Pick up a fuel tank, toss it under the APC and shoot it.
What I didn't understand though, was that the fuel cans were made with Epic Bullet-Proof and Inconvenient Metal for Things That Have Gasoline in Them ®, or EBPIMTTHGT ® for short.

Turns out I'm a complete dumbass, I was meant to pick up a bunch of rockets hidden behind a bunch of sandbags that I had not noticed at all because I was busy with something else.

How about another puzzle? Maybe I can get the next one right?

So, a combine rocket turret causes a road blockage and I need to destroy it. My natural reaction?
Toss a grenade behind the turret to blow it up, nice and easy.

Wrong. I was supposed to stack a bunch of crates, mess around with the building's electricity to lower the metal sheets covering the turret and THEN throw a grenade. It's just making a simple task harder.

But I guess Half-Life wasn't all about puzzles; it was about showing how to tell a story and be a good FPS at the same time. How did Half-Life tell you a story? Well, my answer to that is the environment around you coming alive through the use of scripted sequences. and that certain NPCs may give you a piece of information by directly talking to you. If you don't get what I mean, I'm talking about the...

Voice Acting

Voice acting feels like it was intentionally made bad. The voice actors are emotionless in the way that they speak and it's so unbelievably bad that Pyrocynical delivered "the aliens are coming we've been compromised" better in Hunt Down the Freeman. Link: https://youtu.be/FyqeYVUnyxk

Maybe the combat that I mentioned a minute ago is decent, where could they have possibly messed that up?

Combat

Some goober who was working on this game decided to tweak down weapon effectivity, If I remember correctly, the SMG does more damage on hard in HL2 than on normal in Swelter.

A useless feature I saw that was added was aiming down the sights. Why would I need to? This is Half-Life, not CoD! If I wanted to play CoD, I could boot up CoD right now! I'm playing Half-Life!

There's a lot of features where the developers don't understand this one saying 'Just because you can doesn't mean you should.'.

Additional Issues

All maps are HDR only. This may be an issue for low end PCs.

The part where you jump out of the train at the start is completely ridiculous and unnecessary. The animation where your head gets hit against that pole thing isn't really a proper animation; you literally just glide to the pole.

TL;DR / Conclusion

Bad voice acting, bad combat, bad puzzles and not suited for low end PCs.

20/11/23 IMPORTANT NOTICE AT BOTTOM

After a decent amount of time spent playing, I'm still a bit bad at the game surprisingly enough.

I'd say this game takes serious dedication to get used to, but once you've learned plenty of the game, you should be able to at least get behind a fighter plane.

It is also important that I mention I am playing on the normal settings which is the game's 'realistic' flight model.

I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND you buy a joystick before playing, they cost like £30 or something.

Okay, now for the things that I like about the game.

Customisation

You can tweak different settings to your own liking. For example I didn't like how it was a little bit difficult with the graphics to spot a plane from a distance.

The solution? Turn HUD icons on. No punishment whatsoever unless you play games for a challenge instead of fun.

More on that, you can set things about your plane like weapon convergence and bomb delay and WAY TOO MANY THINGS.

You'll find throughout the rest of the review that this game has so many features I always forget some.

Difficulty

To actually get some satisfaction out of the game (for me), I turned the settings up because I wanted to see if I could fly in a realistic sort of way.

You will learn the game faster if you remember every single thing it tells you; these aren't guidelines, this is how you survive.

Variety

There are many aircraft and bombs and missiles and all other war related stuff in the game. For 8.49 (or 38.49 if you count the joystick thing I said earlier) it is definitely worth it if you have the time.

And when I said all other related stuff in the game I meant it. Cars, tanks, ships all that stuff.

Oh and it isn't just about Russia and Germany, you've also got more than that

The allies are:

• Russia
• USA
• England
• Australia
And plenty more I forgot.

The axis are:

• Germany
• Romania
• Finland
• Japan
• Italy (sort of, made the G.50 which the finnish fought with but italy is not a playable country in the base game)
• Slovakia

I think that's all of them.

Campaigns

And we are not stopping HERE! You can either do static campaigns which are a set of missions put into one, or you can do dynamic campaigns where things change depending on what you do. The frontlines can move backwards or forwards depending on your performance.

You can also earn rewards which are JPEGs (or whatever sort of image format was popular at the time for games) to show how well you've done.

Full Mission Builder

The Full Mission Builder (or FMB as I will call it from now on) is complex, but you can create full missions with it. Bombing raids? Interception? Recon? Escort? You can do all that.

You can even share these with your friends and post them online for other people to enjoy.

There are many tutorials online on how to use the FMB and there is a little bit of information in the manual for the game.

Multiplayer?

Since the original servers are long gone, you will have to install third party software, personally I don't play multiplayer, but it is an option.

Conclusion

Cheap? Yes.

Content? A lot.

Limited? Maybe.

Hard? Yeah.

Worth it? Yes

AS OF 20/11/23 (11/20/23 FOR AMERICANS), I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS GAME DUE TO IT BEING UNABLE TO BE REINSTALLED! IT WILL NOT OPEN IF YOU REINSTALL THE GAME!

EDIT: YOU CAN FIX THIS BY TURNING OFF DEP (DATA EXECUTION PREVENTION) AND RESTARTING YOUR PC!
