DOOM makes you feel like the ultimate badass.

It looks slick, plays snappy, the soundtrack is metal af and dynamically highlights the action perfectly.
It's riddled with homage to its legacy as the grand-mommy franchise of first person shooters, without falling into self-referential laziness.

It knows that it is about the fast-paced killing of multitudes of demons with heavy riffs blasting in the background. This is what the game does, and it does it well. No puzzles, no moral quandaries. Some exploration if you're into that. Mostly it's a satisfying buildup of arsenal and equipment to face a steadily increasing challenge.

DOOM on the right difficulty setting, whatever that is for you, manages to make every victorious fight feel like an achievement. It's always tense, sometimes overwhelming but never hopeless. Every victory feels earned, and each subsequent fight makes you wonder how you ever struggled earlier. It's really quite brilliantly balanced.

The tone of the story and lore elements you can find is satirical and blatantly over the top but the game never stops taking itself seriously. A ruthless corporation weaponizing hell is serious business. Killing all the demons is important work. It's all a bit ridiculous, but it's played straight. Everyone is in on it, and the DOOM universe is a perfect self-consistent bubble where there are chainsaws on Mars.

DOOM is a gift.
