An experience beyond words. Can't even do it justice.

Utterly gorgeous art, a wonderful, pensive soundtrack, and an emotionally devastating yet genuinely beautiful story all mix with a unique and fun take on metroidvania gameplay that never seems to get old. This game bleeds true passion and soul from every crevice. Every minute I didn't spend playing it, I was thinking about it.

Easily in my top 3 games of all time. The kind of game you will feel lucky to have played.

After 500 hours I can confidently call this my favourite multiplayer game of all time, and probably one of the most fun I have ever played. It strikes a very nice balance between "hardcore" shooters like Squad and such, and more arcadey games like Battlefield, which means you can acclimatize to this game coming from pretty much anywhere with varying degrees of difficulty. It's a lot to get used to and you will generally spend your first hours getting TOTALLY ♥♥♥♥ stomped, but if you can put in the time to really get into this game and stick it through you'll learn to love it.

That's the most important part that I cannot stress enough - don't let the game get you down when you're new, as time goes on you will get used to it and start to figure out how to do well for yourself.

- The gunplay in this game is on another level. Everything will kill you in one or two shots, so there's no ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ weapons, just chaos on the battlefield. The majority of engagements happen within 100m or so of the enemy, so there's no sitting on a hillside plinking away at the guys on the other hillside. Everything is fun and satisfying to use (even just the default rifleman role, so it's never boring), and you'll never feel like you're at a disadvantage in a fight. The asymmetrical warfare is pulled off perfectly, with very few maps being at all one-sided (and winning on a rare one-sided map is doubly satisfying). Some days you might feel like riding a Huey into battle to die for your government with Jimi Hendrix blowing your ears out, some days you'll feel like defending your rice with tripwire bombs and bush warfare, and you can play accordingly.

- The servers are just the right size and the objective gameplay is set up in just the right way that getting killed is pretty much a drop in the bucket, while performing well (especially with a squad) can put some real hurt on the enemy, which means that having a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ match is mostly painless and having a great one makes you feel like the king of 'Nam.
- The most important part here is that this game is heavily TEAM-Oriented. Getting 50 kills can feel awesome but you won't single-handedly win the battle by doing it. Working with your squad to out-maneuver the enemy and quickly capture points is what wins matches, and you will be doing ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ for the team if you pick sniper and sit back picking off a few dozen dudes all match.

- It's called PTSD simulator for a reason. This game is very immersive, and you will never forget the first time a napalm strike misses you by 10 feet and fries the guy running ahead of you, or the guy next to you peeks out of a bunker and gets vaporized by an RPG. Or likewise, you throw a grenade into a foxhole and 5 bodies fly out, or stumble on an enemy ambush and mow down 12 guys Rambo-style with an M60.

- Customization! Playing G.I. Barbie is a fun secondary feature, with a lot of cool ♥♥♥♥ you can plaster on your soldier that stays generally period-appropriate and doesn't stray too far into being ridiculous. Hitting level 90 and unlocking the aviator shades is a milestone unlike any other.

- The game has around 1500 active players on a consistent basis, which isn't a lot, but it's always enough that a whole lot of 64 player servers are filled up and you'll NEVER have trouble getting into a match. It also means the game's community is relatively tight-knit and you'll start to recognize a lot of regulars in most servers, so you can even learn your enemy. Voice Chat is an essential feature too, getting "into character" is a ♥♥♥♥ ton of fun and you'll always hear people saying crazy ♥♥♥♥ when there's a lot going on.

- An important note: Bugs & Dev support. Antimatter Games cut off support in 2019 and moved onto their upcoming game '83 (which looks great, go check them out.) The publisher, Tripwire, has given some cursory bug fixes and QoL in recent months but will probably peter out by next year, so we're stuck with what we've got (which is still a lot of great stuff, thankfully.)
This game can be buggy under the surface, but it generally manifests as a bunch of little things, and I haven't encountered a truly "game-breaking" bug in a long time. But you will definitely notice things like vaulting delays and pre-game movement. It's far from being enough to ruin the game, but it can be annoying sometimes.

Despite that, this game hits a perfect little niche that hasn't been replicated anywhere else. Not playing for a while leaves a Vietnam-shaped hole in my heart that no other game has ever filled. I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who will listen, this game is unbelievably fun and it will hold a special place in my heart forever. It also goes on sale a lot (<$10 during the Christmas sale as I type this) so if you're feeling iffy about the default price tag you can always wait a month or two for the inevitable sale.

Overall: 9.5/10. Everyone on earth should own this game. It's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ awesome.
