Why would you ever change an existing map? Just make a new version that's separate... All these Imagine Dragons songs are ruined now.

A PvE Review
Out of all the ~20 survival-crafter games I've played, V Rising is by far my favorite. It was a revelation because it made me realize that I don't give a ♥♥♥♥ about immersion in survival games. I thought I did. But I don't. There's nothing realistic about the game. Most survival games are first-person for immersion purposes. But do you really care about immersion? I realized I don't, and that survival is just a context for the things I do care about: progression, resource management, combat, co-op potential, base-building, and just that dopamine trickle from attaining gradual mastery.

V Rising excels at all these elements of survival. Let's break these down.

Progression
There are basically 3 progression paths: (1) killing bosses to unlock abilities or building options, (2) gear level (crafting weapons/armors), and (3) improving your base(s). All of these are straightforward, easy to manage, and quite rewarding, even from the start. One of the best things about V Rising is that it's instantly rewarding. Even Valheim takes a while to get going.

That being said, the game currently has a relatively short play time until you get to late-game. Some say 10-15 hours, but only if you're rushing as fast as you can. I think ~30 is probably average.

Also, if you find running back to base boring (like I do), you can enable teleport with resources in the game options if you run your own server. You can also increase stack sizes.

Resource management
Resources and recipes are solid and straightforward. The aspect I really want to mention is the "survival" element, which is done really well here. When you drink blood, you sate your thirst bar. If your thirst bar is empty, you lose HP (but can't die just from thirst). Standard so far. But what's really cool is that you get stats from the type and quality of blood you drink, which makes feeding a strategic decision. If you happen to drink some really sweet blood, then you may decide you need to get aggressive and use that blood to attack a boss. It's easy to keep your blood topped off, but it's a fun challenge to maintain high-quality blood.

Let's be clear: if you enjoy survival because you enjoy living on the knife's edge, constantly scrounging, constantly wondering if you'll starve to death, this is not the game for you. It's easy to survive, but it's challenging to thrive.

Oh, by the way, you can heal the "gray bar" when out of combat. You don't need to use Blood Mend. That's not super clear in the tutorial, and I didn't realize it until I got 100% Beast blood and became Wolverine.

Combat
I wanted to like Valheim, but the combat was so clunky. This is a problem area for most first-person survival games. If you like ARPGs, you'll like combat in Valheim. It's tight; it's polished; it's disciplined; it's fun. You get so many playstyle options from mixing-and-matching different weapon types and abilities.

Co-op potential
This is a fantastic co-op experience. The game was designed from the ground-up for co-op (and PvP), and the multiplayer experience is probably superior to the solo experience.

Base-building
Building in V Rising is relatively simple and rigid. It's much closer to Evil Genius or Dungeon Keeper than it is to Valheim or Minecraft. You clear out an area and then add walls to a square grid. Placing different floors create different rooms that have bonuses for matching furniture. You can fine-tune object placement within each square of the grid, but that's about it. There's no fine material placement like in Valheim, and you only work with a single floor at a time (though some floors may be higher than others due to terrain). But you don't have to worry about one part of a floor being half an inch too high to connect to another part.

If you consider yourself a "master builder" who needs to micromanage every part of a build, you'll find the building here underwhelming. But if you're happy with your basic McMansion as long as it's filled with fun toys, then you'll be right at home.

Y U NO PVP!?
V Rising supposedly has a really solid PvP experience, and I can see why it would. I personally play survival for cooperative PvE. It's not that I dislike PvP. Quite the opposite: my top 2 most-played games are DotA 2 and PUBG. I probably have 3000+ hours across DotA 1 and 2. Team PvP is my jam. Just not in this genre.

Diplomacy is a complete joke. Barbarians are completely nonsensical. Hopefully someday Sid Meier will figure out how to program AI.

Updated review:

Thanks for fixing the HOTAS issues, but today the game crashed in a ranked match. Then when I loaded the game again, it froze and wouldn't let me tab out or even switch virtual desktops. I had to restart. Fix this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game.

Great for people who either (1) are afraid they might have fun while gaming or (2) are really into mil sims. Not for the average gamer, casual player, or gamer dad who doesn't have all day to stare at a black screen waiting for a medic.
