Early in PoE’s history, there used to be races during the season to help bump player numbers once mechanics had gotten stale. One of the more common race rewards was two cans of marmite, a local NZ delicacy.

GGG would sign the cans and ship them to the race winners and it was common for those players to take a photo with their cans and post them on the official forums. The titles would always be something like “My two cans arrived today!”.

One French race winner posted his arrival photos but didn’t have great English skills so he butchered the title to “le two cans has arrived” - the community turned it into a big joke and “two cans” was eventually swapped to “toucan” and the meme was born

Players would flood the chat with toucan images so eventually GGG had to clamp down on the meme. As the game developed even the races themselves went extinct. The last race was held in 2016, when The Undertaker threw Mankind off Hell In A Cell, and plummeted 16 ft through an announcer’s table
