TLDR: The game was rushed. Has awful performance. Paid the price for forcing "open world". Didn't get to cook enough on skill or weapon design and balance. Play previous titles if you haven't until updates end or DLC releases.

Negatives
The game was rushed out for the end of japans fiscal year to please shareholders, plaguing many parts of the game.
They haphazardly changed a bunch of mechanical things in the game that have built up over its history. Alot of it to force "open world" which cost the game greatly in performance and QOL.
Set building is lacking, alot of skills are intentionally balanced or designed to be useless "bait". They wanted to kill crit and help element but element is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and crit is still great. Massive steps back from sunbreak.
Weapons have suffered greatly from bad balance or design. Several of them have become 1 skill spam. Some of them have had math changed for the worse contributing even more to the lack of interesting builds. Massive steps back from sunbreak again.
Monster difficulty is very lacking. Gore and update 1 give a glimpse of a better balanced endgame. Everything previous is just a boring grind though.

Positives
The current iterations of Sword and Shield & Gunlance are great fun, taking many good inspirations from earlier MH titles.
Title Update 1 has done a good job showing a brighter future for monster balance, atleast at the endgame.

Actually just play any of MH World+Iceborne, Rise+Sunbreak, Generations Ultimate instead and check back after updates end or DLC release.

Just played to first boss encounter, honestly banger game already.

Lovely game, especially with friends but felt the PvE content got alot worse into the late game.

Picked it up again after 2 years, still feels like a subpar ARPG and still has alot of bugs and janky gameplay.
