Is Basement a bad game? No, absolutely not. I'm sure there's a market for this type of game, and I thought I'd enjoy it a lot more than I did. But unfortunately while there's a LOT of good in this game there's just enough there that I don't like that would make me tell people to give this one a pass.

So first off the art and style is fantastic. Absolutely love the aesthetic of the game. Next the mechanics themselves are pretty solid, the game plays smoothly and logically. Finally while there's no tutorial the game play comes in episodic chapters that introduce the mechanics and game elements nicely. (I never tried sandbox mode in the 5.5 hrs played before this review)

However there's one massive flaw in the game, and it runs contrary to a lot of the other reviews I read. The game is quite difficult. In the normal campaign, I found myself having to reload each chapter / level several times trying to figure out the exact right balance of things needed for that particular level. Compounding this is what comes down to occasional RNG that can really hurt you. Sure the two gangs might attack each other and weaken each other so you can come in with thugs and clean them up. But far more often you'll find yourself moving your thugs out of an area only to have it reclaimed by gangs half a day later. Quite frankly it just isn't fun spending 2 hours on a level, reloading or restarting it over and over and over. Further compounding this is a lack of a difficulty slider or setting for the main game.

All in all, while I somewhat enjoyed this game, I find that I'm very glad I bought it on sale, and wouldn't recommend this game to my friends.

Surprisingly complex and deep game despite the cutesy graphics. When I delved into this I found a tutorial that taught me the basics and what I needed to know. Then I started up a successful desktop factory. The joy of market fluctuations and trying to eek out profits when you're close to bankruptcy makes this a full formed factory game, not just an assembly puzzler.

I've played dozens of games of Terraforming Mars in real life and was excited for this one. However I am SO saddened by this game. Shiny wonderful graphics hide what are several game breaking bugs. I went through three seperate games of the digital version and EACH version I ended up losing because of a game breaking bug or an inability to place something which should be legal according to the rules but wouldn't be allowed in the digital version.

I'd give this one a pass for at least a while till they work out all the bugs.

One of my all time favorite games. I've been playing this game for hundreds of hours since early in its early access phase, and it's only gotten better over time. A uniquely challenging game that doesn't hold your hand and teaches you how to play by causing you to "fail upwards" and try try try again. It's a little bit of science, a little bit of base building, and a WHOLE lot of cursing. Absolutely one you should check out.

I first played The Last Hex after meeting the devs at Buffalo Conquest gaming convention, and I was struck by their passion and energy for their project. This translates well into their game and what comes across is that it is truly a labor of love. While inspired by slay the spire it doesn't feel like a clone. The deck building mechanic is fantastic and the gaming upgrade options let you feel like you're playing a new game every time you play. The pressure of the growing threat forces you to balance upgrading now versus later, constantly pushing you to try to fight on the edge of the difficulty you're comfortable with, which is an amazing thing. Instead of enforcing difficulty on you, you make your own. Because if you wait too long, all will be lost. (pun intended)

Check this one out if you're a fan of deck building combat games !

So I bought this game when it came out of Early access, and played it and was solidly 'meh' on it. Set it aside after a few days and then forgot about it. But then a little while ago I noticed that it had been updated and read about the update. Then I read about all the other updates that had happened since launch. So I gave it another shot.

WOW, so glad I did. What astroneer does is take the survival / crafting / building genre and put a new and slightly different twist on it. With gorgeous graphics, a minimal UI, and sparse yet flawless sounds what ASTRONEER offers is less a game and more an interactive work of art. I played through the entire game over the next few days and found myself in a calm, relaxed, almost medatitive state of game play. Till the end of the game, there's always something to do, or you can just not do anything. The demands of the game are there, but not pressuring you. Be creative, explore, or just sight see. Or you can focus on the game, research, craft, gather. It doesn't matter, and the game doesn't force you to do what you don't want.

I highly highly recommend this one to anyone who likes the gather / craft / build genres of games.

I can't really Recommend this game, but that statement comes with a caveat.

Let me say right off the bat that this game isn't in any way a bad game. In fact, it's a fairly good game. But ultimately it's a pretty forgettable game in my opinion. ultimately I'd give this game a solid 5/10. It's a good game, but the flaws and rather mundane bits just make it very meh. It's not bad, it's just meh. Get some guns, do one or two modifications to them, nothing special. Get a few totally forgetable perks to 'upgrade' your character, but only a few of them actually feel signifigant (grappling hook which is far underused and extra holster which is oh so needed) There's some challenges in the game that test your skills, but don't really feel that exciting over all. There's multiple vehicles, but attack helicopters just dominate everything so why use anything else?

Don't think it's bad, there's some enjoyable bits, and some humor to the game. But the forced sequences are so forced they're teeth gnashingly bad. The ending is downright terrible, though I'm given to understand pretty standard for the Far Cry series. There is one bit where I felt like the game really shined and held my interest for a few hours, the arcade mode. I spent a few hours, after beating the game, messing around with the quick play arcade mode, trying out player created maps. I enjoy seeing the creativity of other players, and I went from a stealth mission to a shoot out in the old west, to an assassinate and escape map, back to back and felt like each was different and interesting.

Ultimately I wouldn't suggest anyone pick this one up, UNLESS they are a fan of the franchise, or can get it on sale cheap, OR are just looking for a kind of brainless open world shooter. In which case, this one isn't too bad and you might enjoy yourself.

A surprisingly exciting new game that I came across that combines aspects of two of my favorite games (darkest dungeon and Slay the spire) while still being its own playstyle and theme. For an early access game (writing this review 7/1/2019) the game feels amazingly finished and I noticed perhaps 1 bug in 6 hours of play time and even that was fairly minor. But most of all, they PROPERLY USE THE OXFORD COMMA in their writing.

I mean, come on, that alone makes it worth purchasing. Support proper grammar, mirite?

:D

Wow, I don't even remember when I bought this game, but it sat in my steam library for a while. Then one day I decided to play it on my twitch stream just to get it checked off as one of the games that I'd played. HOLY COW. I'd intended to play it for an hour or two, then next thing I know it's four hours later and I don't want to end my stream on schedule. I was having too much fun with it. It absolutely hits my strategy / colonization itch.

The music is lovely (though I usually listen to the radio) and the graphics are simple but beautiful. The mechanics are very solid and once you get into the flow of the game the anxiety can really ramp up as you try to strategize and plan things out. For $10 USD this game is 100% worth a look, don't let the screenshots fool you, there's amazing depth and complexity that will suck away the time as you play this. Oh, and a massive unlockable system that keeps the game progressing down a difficulty curve that seems very well balanced.

10/10 little game, should buy!

The best way I can describe this easily is that it's minecraft but made for adult players. While the original learning curve is high for new players, once you get the fundamentals of the game down you're introduced to one of the most amazing sandbox games I've ever played. Build, craft, create logic circuits, even launch a fish into space.... cause that's a thing.

While I tried three seperate times to pick this game up, I'm glad I kept trying because on my fourth try i was hopelessly and irredemmibly hooked. It is a must buy game for fans of the crafting genre.
