The price is certainly right!

So, a free to play deck builder? I figure I'll try it out, might be good for a little bit of time. Five hours later I realize I have to write a review. While the game isn't perfect, it's good....damn good. The art is great, the sound is great, the gameplay mechanics are great. Oh yeah, and like I said it's free. Oh there's DLC you can buy to expand the game. Maybe I'll buy it, maybe I won't. But good hot damn, for exactly zero dollars, I've got several hours into it and I think I've got easily another four or five before I run out of content.

As a deck builder it's well done, and while it's a bit on the 'easy' side, there is a scaling between the 4 free classes. So they get tougher, and there's also a hard mode which I haven't touched yet.

Over all if you like deck builders, you should check this one out... what do you have to lose?

--edit--
13 hours to complete the 'main' game and there's still more content ahead of me. Full on, if you like deck builders, check it out. I'd say it'd be worth it if it cost twice as much, but two times zero is still zero. So, what are you waiting for, give it a download?

Come on, it's arguably the best fallout game out there. It has it's flaws, but it's an amazing game.

You don't need me to review this, just buy it.

A really interesting take on the deck builder game. One part slay the spire, one part darkest dungeon, one part RPG. But really not like any of those things, I found this a very refreshing take on a glutted and somewhat stale genre.

I bought this game for all of 0.50 USD when it was on sale, and played it on stream for 3 hours. It was fun, worth the money. Puzzles are wheeeeeeeeeee. Most frustrating part of the game was when I alt tabbed, and the game crashed. Otherwise JUST the right amount of challenge!

Re-review of the game on June 8th, 2022
Original review below.

So I'm going to change my recommend on this game from no to a yes.
The 2.0 update made me give it another shot and I'll admit, I'm enjoying my time with it. It can still be grindy and annoying at the start, but that's just because you need to get to automation and then it gets way more fun.

F*** this buggy ass game.

First of all ask yourself this:

Do you like the idea of mind numbing back breaking repetitive manual labor?
Do you find it fun to try to to pick up very tiny items off the ground constantly, one at a time?
Do you think that a game can look pretty, but be completely unfun to play and be worth your time?
Do you enjoy unexplained mechanics?
Do you like 'snap' builds that are very tricky to snap, and go yetting off into the 5th dimension if you don't get them right?
Do you like losing a good chunk of time when said yeeted items just vanish into the 5th dimension?

If you've answered yes to all of the above questions, then maybe you should buy this game. But if you answered no to any of them, then you should avoid this one.

One of the best STS style deckbuilder games I've played, and I've played a lot of them. The tactical nature of running on three floors makes the game feel different from the other deck builders, and the graphics, gameplay, and sound are all on point. Really impressed with this one.

Klei does it again.

Take some slay the spire style deck building, and a futuristic RPG and then shake them up well and you come out with Griftlands. The increasing difficulty of the game feels very natural as your decisions make you enemies or allies throughout your playthrough which come with their own buffs or debuffs. The inclusion of the negotiation deck is a fantastic shift and forces you to think carefully about your play style. Do you try to negotiate a bargain on a purchase now, or save your resolve for a potentially later time when you might need it more?

Everything is well designed and any mechanics are shown when you mouse over them, leading to a non intrusive way to learn what various mechanics and lore items are.

I mean, at this point, is there anything Klei doesn't do well? If you like deck builders and RPGs this is an easy buy.

Slay the waifu? Anime the spire?

Whatever, the game is well balanced, fun, and offers fun replayability. Worth the money imo.

Before I write my review I want to state my qualifications here:

I've played 14 different deck builder / card collector style games in the last year. Some of them for hundreds of hours all of them for at least a dozen plus hours. I state this because I want to let you reading this know that I understand the mechanics of these style games, and I'm not simply being salty.

This game is horribly out of balance.

I played four games and the best I did was about 5 or 6 fights under my belt before you get crushed. In the last game I played my hero trounced the first fight, then got to the second. Three enemies, two of which hit for 20 damage per, the other which hits for less but poisons. I can play defend cards to block 15 damage (but not poison) but each card costs 1 mana and I only have 3 mana. Are you seeing the problem? Even if I did nothing but play defends in a round I'd block 45 damage, take 40 from the two orcs, 10 from the mushroom, and get poisoned, net result; do no damage to them and take 5+ poison damage to me. Or, alternatively I can try to DPS burst them down. This was the choice I went with, got two down before I went from full life to dead over a few rounds.

This was the SECOND fight.

The fact that you have to unlock heroes AFTER rescuing them randomly is a little frustrating. As well you get to 'randomly' choose an artifact chest, but you don't actually get a choice, it's just random. You click on a chest and you randomly get an artifact, while showing you what you could have gotten. Why? Why not give the player a choice of three artifacts and let them pick? It's senseless.

Also the cost of cards in the shop is a bit too high in my opinion and the various crystals, gold, and blue (?) coins are never explained, leaving you to wonder what they are, how much you need, and what you do with them. That exploration isn't bad in it's own right, but is frustrating when paired with the TERRIBLE game balance.

I would not recommend this game. There are so many other, better, deck builders out there like Slay the Spire, Neoverse, The Last Hex, or if you want an RPG style game with this feel, check out Deck of Ashes.

I'll give this one another look if the devs seriously re-tune it. But otherwise into the junk bin it goes.
