RE-REVIEW
(11-18-20)
So, it's amazing when a game can turn around for you. The first week this game was live was an absolute S-show. It was so bad it completely soured me on the game. But I've had the chance much later to go back and re-play it and while it's not a perfect game, it has become one I quite enjoy and do recommend when I play it on my twitch stream.

The DLC are quite enjoyable and the Breaking Dead zombie update was a massive change to game play imho. I've really enjoyed what this game eventually became and think it's worth changing my review from Not Recommended to DO recommend!

Wow, I wanted to like this game so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ much and the company has made it such a let down.

I bought this day one and streamed it for over 20 hours on my twitch page. Why did I finally have to quit? Because Tinybuild released a game that was unfinished and is essentially still in beta. EIGHT Days after release there have been SEVEN gameplay balancing changes to the game that patched it, and some of which significantly change the way the game is played. This is not what you do to a game that is LIVE and version 1.0. This is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ beta testing ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. It is literally impossible for me to play a game and stream it when I don't know what each day's patch is going to bring.

I know I have 20 hours played but I'm really considering contacting steam and asking for a refund on this game, because it's NOT finished. It's a buggy, grindfest, beta game that they're pretending is live, when it obviously isn't.

DO NOT BUY.

What a strange and enjoyable game this turned out to be.

Take one part RPG, complete with lovely 16 bit era graphics, mix in villiage management, add a dash of "idle" style games, and then sprinkle with some story and lore. Sound confusing? It is, a bit, but you know what, it REALLY works. I couldn't believe how quickly this game hooked me once I got the hang of it. Sure, a good chunk of my time was 'idle grinding' while doing other things. But then you go back to the game, level up your heroes, re-outfit them, and figure out what quest you want to go on while you're actually playing actively.

It sounds like such a strange blend, but I'd say this is by far my favorite idle game that I've ever played. Absolutely worth checking out if you're a fan of management, idle games, or JRPGs as it seems to incorporate the best aspects of all three.

Now, I understand this game just came out of alpha, and is in early access. But at this time I couldn't and wouldn't recommend this game to anyone. I love the premise of a fair, skill based, anti-hacker/cheater based battle royale. I loved pubg, but the hackers killed that game. Unfortunately IoN just isn't ready, it's not done baking, it's not where it needs to be. The controls are still not quite firmed up, and I got caught on terrain a few times in the 90 minutes or so that I played.

More annoyingly is how absolutely lethal all the weapons seem to be. I got headshot with a PISTOL while at full life, full armor, and with a shield, yet still died in one hit? REALLY? How does that happen? If you can die to a pistol in one shot, what's the point of armor at all? In fact most of the games I played in almost every single engagement started and ended with whoever got the drop and first hit on the other player. Because the first hit was almost always the last hit.

Now this alone wouldn't be the worst thing, but the audio isn't quite there yet either. So when you're relying on audio to try to get the drop on someone on the other side of the wall, and then suddenly footsteps stop and then they run around another corner 5 seconds later silent as a mouse, it's rather enraging.

Yeah, so the end result is either:
A. they don't fix some of the mechanical game play problems, in which case you shouldn't play it.
B. they DO fix the problems, in which case you shouldn't play it YET.

Man, it's a tower defense game.

What do you want me to say? Do you like tower defense games? Yeah, then you'll like this one. Nothing really super innovative or original, which is really the only negative thing I can say about it. But look, it's got solid game play, and that's what you want, isn't it? ISNT IT? Yeah, it is. If you are reading this, your'e already thinking about buying this game right? So, you also already know what to expect from this type of tower defense game.

I found this game highly enjoyable, and more than that highly challenging.

That's not to say that the game is difficult, it's just very complex, and in that you get this great sense of how fair the game can be. Especially with my time playing other PVP games like hearthstone and the like, you come to realize how unfair RNG mechanics are. Well Prismata doesn't have those. It's pure strategy, pure skill, and above all else, purely fair.

There's zero pay to win aspects. All of the microtransactions are for cosmetics, or to unlock additional single player content. But wait, you may be saying, I have to pay to unlock single player content? Yes, but it's much like the tell tall episodic games or the like. You get a hell of a lot for free. I'm told the base game will be free to play when it leaves early access, I got a beta invite code for signing up.

I think that's one of the most impressive aspects of the game to me, is how non selfish and greedy the game feels when it comes to the microtransaction aspect. After seeing so many games bleed users with keys, lootboxes, powerups, and the most powerful units hidden behind rare RNG chance.... this game is just refreshingly honest and open. Oh, you'd better believe I spent some shards to unlock the "America" drone skin. :D But did I have to? No!

So lets talk about the actual game itself for a moment. There's two ways to play, pvp and pve.

PVP is probably the meat of the game for most players, and again, the fairness comes out and is rather obvious. The 'deck' of units is created semi randomly, and then both players draw from that deck of potential cards. No player has an advantage of overpowered units or cards. In addition each game is going to be a little different, because you don't know what units will be available until you get into the game. So there's no overpowered deck builds, no one turn kill strategies, no 'meta' defining plays. Each game plays out with turn by turn evolution of the battle. Which again is so amazingly refreshing. Another thing that's a fantastic addition is the 'time bank' mechanic. When you're in a battle if you take your turn very quickly, you start to 'bank' some of the spare time you had in your turn, which you can then use in later turns if you have to take a longer turn or need extra time to think. It encourages you to be tactical and thoughtful, but also play quickly and not just waste your time if you know what you want to do. Why don't all card / pvp games include a mechanic like this ?!

The PvE or single player is functionally the same game, but finds a rather interesting visual novel experienced wrapped around the core game mechanics. It gets quite challenging, I'm not going to lie, as soon as you start to get to the end of episode 1. I found myself going back several turns and undoing plays or even restarting the whole match trying to figure out the optimal play style to get through some really tough challenges. On top of the story "campaign" mode there's challenges and training puzzles that task you to figure out how to win a scenario in a set time, or with set resources.

Again, all of this for one single base price.

I guess if I had to have any criticism, it would be that the method of unlocking skins / microtransactions does feel a LITTLE bit random. But again you do have to keep in mind that since these are just cosmetic items and actually have no effect on the game, it doesn't REALLY matter. Right? RIGHT ? :D

I find this game WELL worth the $25 price tag, and the developers are giving away free EA keys in their discord, and I'm also told this is going free to play when it leaves EA. So, really, do you have a good reason NOT to check this out? No, you do not. It's a hell of a ride and a hell of a lot of fun.

Another great game from Subset Games.

While this one doesn't hook me quite the same way as FTL, their smash hit, did. Because lets face it, I grew up watching star trek, not monster movies. But with that exception, everything about Into the breach feels just about perfect. The great pixelated graphics, the simple yet complex game play. The learning curve, which is assisted by having to 'unlock' new mechs. The challenges to complete acheivments. This game is just going to be another amazing black hole of time for me. I know it. I love it.

This game went from a favorite to one of the worst games in my library.

Look, all through EA I defended the game, for it's flaws it was still a gorgeous and fun game. But then China. Yes, Im sorry, but this is what it is. This isn't racism, this isn't nationalism, this is just the hard facts. According to Brendon "Playerunknown" Green roughly 99% of all cheat programs for this game are coming out of China right now. In addition, the lag and ping of China players on NA or EU servers makes it that much harder for a local player to actually hit the high ping from China. Finally, some of the most racist things I've ever heard have come from the chinese players of this game.

I simply can not recommend this game at all, and would actively advise anyone from buying it, until some sort of region locking system is in place, and Bluehole starts really cracking down a lot harder on the cheaters in the game.

Until then, playing this game legit is basically signing up to be a target dummy for those players with cheats who have a massive advantage over you.

UPDATED REVIEW - original review below this one.

Well, a viewer of my stream gifted me this game with the request that I try it again and give it another chance. Despite being one of maybe 2 or 3 games that I've EVER returned on steam, I agreed. I mean, why not if it's being gifted, right?

I still don't know if I would change my thumbs down to a thumbs up, because quite frankly I don't know if I'd flat out reccomend this game. But I MIGHT depending on the person. I think DBD fills a very specific niche. Quite frankly when you play it with 4 other people and you're in voice chat laughing and joking and one of you is killing the other four, it's just a hell of a lot of fun. But sadly that's not usually the case for most people.

I think some of the issues that I mention in my original reply have gotten better, a little bit, but all of them are still there. The game can still feel like lobby simulator. The people you play with CAN be toxic and salty A.F. The DLC heroes feel way more powerful then the base game, but not as bad as they were before multiple tweaks. Basically everything negative I said in my original review still applies... it's just not quite as bad as it was before.

I've found myself enjoying the role of killer a lot, and have had quite a fun time playing as one, even if I do terribly in a match. As long as you aren't a 'camper' people generally seem to be fairly non toxic, for the most part. What brought about that change from 6 - 7 months ago? I don't know, but it's noticible.

As of the time I'm writing this, they've made changes to the level up system, which means that the shrine of secrets, an important part of leveling up your characters, isn't currently in the game. This makes it feel WAY less grindy since you don't need to try to hope for RNG and the right amount of exp to get character perks. Unfortunately the trade off is that now you NEED to buy the DLC and level up other characters you want to get those perks. So, you know, one step forwards, one step backwards.

/shrug

Listen, ultimately, I'm enjoying it a bit currently, but I just don't know if it's the right game for you, so I'll close with the same sentiment I had 7 months ago:

Save your time, save your money, and unless you have friends you are going to play this with, give this one a pass.

Original review below

There's no way I can reccomend this game, for a few reasons:

- the DLC money grab feels very blatant and intentional.

All of the DLC heroes feel far more powerful then the base game heroes. You can easily spend 2-3 times as much money on the DLC as you did for the base game, and that's not counting if you want the alternate outfits (which arguably ALSO grant an advantage over the base outfits)

- the matching system is terrible

First of all, as a streamer, it's pretty ♥♥♥♥♥♥ to sit in a lobby and wait for people to try to join a game for upwards of 10 minutes. Then depending on everyone's connection, you're sometimes staring at a loading screen for several more minutes. I know that this is frustrating as a solo player, but as a streamer, it makes the game practically worthless to play on stream.

- Disconnects / quitters

So lets say you get into a game and the game begins loading. Guess what happens.... frequently? Someone disconnects, either because of lag or on purpose. Then what? Your loading screen just sits there for upwards of five minutes. That's assuming other people don't force quit the game, which causes the loading screen to go on even longer. Then when you finally get into the game, you're sometimes looking at a 3v1 scenario instead of 4v1. Or god forbid a 2v1, which I've had happen twice in less than 4 hours owning the game. There's pretty much no chance of the survivors winning in a 2v1 scenario. So what happens? The killer often ends up just farming the two remaining players, not letting them win, not letting them lose, for as long as it takes before one of them quits out of the game. Why does he do that?

- The game is VERY grindy.

As you play you earn experience (bloodshards). You use these to rank up your survivors or your killers, but when you put BS into a character, that's it, it's just that ONE character. So decide which killer or survivor you like, because you're going to be putting a LOT of points into them. With only 3ish hours played, I couldn't tell you how much you need to 'max out' even a single character, but I can tell you that as I dumped all my points into one character to see how 'deep' i could go, I didn't even unlock the 2nd perk, which im told is rank 16. It's is an absolutely ridiculous amount of grinding needed especially for new players.

- the level up system

It's called a blood web, making you think you can choose your branch and specialize and pick your talents right? NOPE. you have to put ALL points into ALL nodes on each web before you can go to the next level. it's ridiculous, especially since several of the points on the web are somewhat worthless one shot items.

- one shot items

Remember how i described how some matches are ridiculously unfair because of disconnects and because some killers are FAR more overpowered then others? Well guess what? BEFORE you queue into a game you can choose which items and boosts you want to use, but once you get into a game, boom, they're used up. So if you only have one 'toolkit' left and you queue into a match that has 2 people leave / DC, guess what, that kit's going to be gone on a match you have no chance of winning. GUESS YOU BETTER START GRINDING FOR MORE BLOOD SHARDS EH FRIEND?

- toxicity

This was a mixed bag. About two thirds of my matches were actually pretty cool people. After the game people were like GG or even said a little bit, which was really nice. But of course that just points a glaring finger at the other third of the games I played where people were so toxic it was sad. "Die in a fire noob killer" and the like. Really? How does that enhance the game play experience at all? Also, in game, like I said, some killers will purposely proloung games as much as they can just to farm as much blood shard experience as possible. One game the killer quite handily dispatched three of the survivors (he was using a DLC killer of course) and then would just rotate letting the one living guy pick up someone else, then knocking them down, letting the up person pick someone else up, knocking that down, etc etc etc. Until people started leaving the game. Not letting them get any objectives, just drawing out the game as much as possible to get the maximum amount of blood shards he could.

- bugs

Finally and this is a very minor point and one i didn't experience often in my short time playing it, but the game is buggy. I clipped through walls, rubber banded, and found myself struggling with the terrain far more often then I should have considering my PC specs as well as how long this game has been out. One time it even caused some sort of error where the ALT and the A key were perma pressed down, forcing my character into a permanant crouch shuffle to the left.

Save your time, save your money, and unless you have 4 friends you are going to play this with, give this one a pass.

This is a game that defies easy definition.

I love it, I hate it, it's a work of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ genius.

I don't want to give any spoilers, but the third boss fight was by far one of the most amazing things that's happened to me in video gaming, ever. This game is haunting my thoughts.

I love digitial CCGs because in my youth I played Magic the gathering with my friends. Eternal does something absolutely unbelievable... it offers a better MTG experience then the digital MTG games that are out there. The pacing, the feel, and the style of the game are all sublime, and most amazingly of all, it's free to play. Not free to play like some CCGs where you'd better expect to start cranking out the money if you want to be able to play on any real level, but actually, legitmately free to play. Oh sure there's a microtransaction store, but you never feel like you need it in my opinion. I know people who are hundreds of hours in and loving every second without cracking the wallet once.

If you like CCGs I cant reccomend this one highly enough.
