Sorry to say that, and i love love love EU4 but this DLC and the free content patch ruined it for me.

Espionage makes claims basically instant when you have enough points. Well those do not take too long so after a while you can just spam claims, or do other stuff to piss off your opponent.

Defense near impossible if more than 2 or 3 nations focus on you.

Worst thing however is how unbalanced coastal raids and corruption are.
I am not sure they playtested that so well, cause it is really really bad. One raid can cost you hundreds of sailors and a TON of gold. When i was playing as spain i gained around 18 a month and around 8 gold a month if i didnt pay my troops nor my fortresses. Morroco decided it was time for me to get some love...and raided my coast.

Costs for me: 550 sailors and 70 gold. That eqauls 3 years of sailors and 6 gold per month. Are you nuts???

Corruption:
I took the liberty to free granada from its muslim oppressors ;) and porto from portugal :) result 47% overextension.
This resulted in 0.24 corruption per month. To counter that i had to pay 10!!!!!! Gold per month. And while i did that coastal raids took my money and my sailors...

Keep in mind this comes on top of everything else that overextension already does to you.

It is so pointless. If you could at least turn those of but guess what, free content update 1.16 now forces you into this stupid mechanism.

TLDR: Game ruined thanks to unbalanced feature update.

PS: Rest of the features are awesome but i cannot enjoy the game anylonger. Had to ragequit my first playtest with the new DLC.

Zero took it too another level. I love how this plays, nice additions to the gameplay, many mechanics changed and many things improved.

Well worth the money, good DLC the Crusader Kings II and Europa Universalis 4 style. Not just a bunch of bugfixes. Real big mechanic changes, new artwork, new stuff everywhere.

Still a few bugs but guess what, it´s software. It´s hard to get it perfect especially with a 1 man show development...

Good Job Zero and keep the patches coming.

Now that is how i would have imagined a reskinned and reinvented moo2 with not too much weird ♥♥♥♥ but some nice innovations.

What have we got:
Turn based Grand strategy: check
Basically same techtree logic and technologies: check
Heroes: check
Fleets and Command Points: check
No freakin star lanes: check
Monsters and other threats: check
Weird GNN stuff: check
Tons of buildings: check
Empire Wide food Share: check
Freighters to transport troops, food or citizen: check
Customizable Ships: check
Highly tactical battles: check
Lots of fun and some nice background story: check
Espionage: check
Trade and Diplomacy: check

On the other hand:
Turn based battles: nope! (But their solution is cool too)

Well i can´t really tell why so many people dislike the game. Really can´t. I dont have bugs, it doesnt crash, it is smooth and fast and fun. The Background story is weird in a very good fun way. Had myself chuckle quiet often at the subtle humor of the game.

Im looking forward to more, i can see myself wasting tons and tons of time with this.

TLDR;
You like Moo2? Get it!
You like 4x Space Games... hell yeah get it!
4X Space Games need to have Turn based battles: dont get it! or watch some Lets play first...

All i can say, so far i love it.

After 30 hrs Playtime edit:
So now i have been playing for 30 hrs instead of 3 with the initial Review.
I stand by my recommondation. The Game is fun. It is a nice Master of Orion 2 Clone with nice graphics, subtle humour, some balance issues and many bugs to be fixed.

BUT: Zero, the developer is fixing like no tomorrow. There have been at least 5 hotfixes while i was playing during the last two days. Many bugs i found got fixed at the same day.

Very impressed with the developer so far.

Here is a lil enhanced list of pro and con:
Pro:
  • Nice Gameplay, well done UI
  • Good Sounds and Music
  • Closer to Moo2 than any other 4X space Game out there
  • Tactical Battles are freakin fun, seriously, the one thing many would cry out since its not turn based...it is really good.
  • Interessting "Story" (GNN Style, Quests, Heros with their own quests etc.)
  • Nice Groundbattles during Quests XCom light style.
  • Leaders take part in Ground and Spacebattles and die :)
  • Technology makes your ships stronger, lighter, better in all the right ways, you always want more more more :)
  • Just another turn feeling...gosh i wasted so much time with this already the last two days...my girlfriend is gonna murder me soon i bet :-D

Cons
  • My Girl is sonn gonna murder me because of this ;-)
  • AI is not really aggressive, not a Game for masochists like me. You want it hard? Try a mod or maybe go play something else.I still have hopes for AI improvement patches though.
  • Balancing is a bit off and hard to tell how effective a combo actually is
  • UI is sometimes not really helpful, most cases its nice but in some its just...not yet done it seems
  • Many smaller and bigger issues, i feel i have to tell that but many of them are already on Zeros list of fixes or are already fixed.
  • Needs a bit more time to ripe...to be perfect

TLDR;
Game is enjoyable in its current state. You love Moo2? Get it!
The first 1-2 Games are tremendously enjoyable.
If you are up for a challenge, look somewhere else ;-)

I can´t stress out enough how much i REALLY REALLY REALLY dont like the new empire-planet-linking nonsense in this game. It is utterly broken and makes the game feel so tedious. I get the idea behind it though, that a planet depends on delivering of goods and ressources from other places but come on... one missing part in the chain and the once mighty uber planet crashes down taking half the empire with it.

Just utter nonsense. You want dependencies? You had it right in Star Ruler 1 already.

For the rest of the game i love what you did, you made the interface much less of a mess than in star ruler 1 and had some nice ideas in diplomacy. But it is just no fun for me anymore. I loved the first part, hoped for more of the same with better features and ui and some improvements... but this? no sir! not my game...and i love space 4x to death normally.

An amazing Game with sadly a lot of bad ratings, which i seriously cant understand. It is really well done without many issues, runs smoothly and it is actually fun and has good depth to it. Tons of strategies, technologies, different ways to play. It is so much better than the shallow civ beyond earth. Id say it is the game beyond earth should have been.

Although the AI is on the tough side i like that. It gets boring fast if the ai just waits till you slaughter it.

Most amazing game of all time.

I easily have several thousands of hours maybe even tens of thousands in all civ titles together playing it since civ 1.

But civ 4 is the best in terms of depth, replayability and strategies. Its not as dumbed down as civ 5 and has many ways to win the game not just war.

Edit:
To add a little depth to this review, compare the mod features of civ 5 and 4 and you will easily see how superior Civ 4 still is even without Steam Workshop Support.

- Civ 4 has Multiplayer Mods. Still not happy?
- Civ 4 vanilla has a working AI, want more?
- Civ 4 Ai can be modded to kick you in the butt unless you are a freakin PRO! More?
- Civ 4 has many ways too win and each can be played for equally...
- Civ 4 offers small civs a debth and playability you cannot get in civ 5 it is actually pretty damn well balanced. Since with small civs you can outtech bigger guys like crazy... he attacks with stacks of doom 4x your size? Who cares his Swordsmen are no match for your riflemen...done that dozens of times...
- Civ 4 has a well balanced techtree with rounded civics that work like a charm beside it. You can stack your bonusses to match your preferred way of winning. Tech-crazy, Culturewhore, Militarist, Space-Alien-Weirdo...and so on.

Ever wanted to get diplomacy to be transparent in 5? Me too...never really worked. In Civ 4 it is transparent, you can actually rely on the information in diplomacy. Are those pesky civs getting on your nerves...mod it, mute them, play in peace and calm :)

Alright so the only downside for some might be the stack of doom, but if you rely on that vs a skilled player you can probably kiss your stack goodbye anyway... so, in MP a non issue if you know what you are doing. In SP, well... it actually is not a clickfest like civ 5..."hey your 500000 units need to move...even though the entire map is already filled with units, but please do..."

Hands down...Civ 4 >>>> Civ 5 all the way except in graphics :)
----
With civ 6 on the market now for a while and the first DLC also available i still stand by my review. Civ 4 is by far the best title in the series so far. Civ 6 just never really has much action, its Civ City more like a sim city in civ clothing. You build and build and build never really action and if you do attack the AI is so freakin bad at basically the entire game, its just another tedious boring repetetive task. Sadly the only real action you can have in Civ 6 is religious wars, the rest is just not good. Remember Panzer General? Thats how turn based 1 unit per tile tactical battles should look like, but civ 6 is too small for that. A city has no real surrounding land its just city, minimal distance city, minimal distance city...not much tactics on near to no land possible. If you up the minimal distance to 5-7 (mod) its getting better however tech progression is also way too fast. You build a few units you can already start building the new type...and so on. Tech progression too fast, wars to boring, constantly building some upgrades boring trade mechanics, boring religion, boring culture...i am slowly losing hope with the game designers at firaxis. It was once GRAND Strategy now its more like dumbed down to tactical warfare between production centers. Not much grand strategy anymore in sight. Better play Europe Universalis IV or Stellaris or Civ 4 :)

Wow, when i heard about that title and read some details i was hyped. Loving the idea and playing it however are 2 very different things.

So in short i went from hyped to desperately wanting to get rid of it in a matter of 1.5 hours of trying it. Here is why:

  • Graphics are ugly but i could deal with it if the rest was nice enough
  • World interaction is clumsy and boring, its menus over menus over menus, clicking repeatedly an action to cut 1 single tree ergo boooooring
  • Interacting with NPCs is unintuitive and feels disconnected. Everything happens in a chat and in a status window. Other games solve that much more intruiging and engaging.
  • Now for technical problems: i do have a rather big 4K Monitor and the UI for this just released title cant handle it. Its unreadably small, and even though text size can be changed it helps nothing, nada, niente...(nice feature btw: here change your font size user...result: just kiddiiiiing...)
  • Slowpaced and boring, getting into the game just doesnt feel like i am the one doing stuff and dont get me even started on the fighting. Whoever invented that system must be out of work and bored to death with the rest of his life so he can enjoy sitting in front of a young chicken for 5 minutes while you exchange attacks with it. Comeon a freakin chicken takes 5 minutes to kill with a sword? really?
  • Nothing is intuitive, you have to guess what you can do. Wanna do something with that nice piece of wood you got there? Well figure it out which of your numerous tools does what to it, try and error. This could be done so much easier but i guess Wurm just loves its deep textmenu interaction style.

0/10 would never attack a chicken with a sword again and waste 5 minutes of my life waiting for it to die while receiving numerous wounds. da ♥♥♥♥?!?!

Its just not a good game. Stripped down to some dumb mechanics in the campaign map, taken away most of the things that made past TW great. It got streamlined, made more "accessible" and during this it got boring, repetetive and just not really intruiging to play. Even with mods its still a dull experience. During Campaign you run from one war to another to the next and yet another. There is basically no economy any longer, diplomacy is near none existent and whats left means nothing. Just throw some dice, it will probably get you more reliable and fun results.

What a waste of time the campaign is. If you like the fights go fight. They are fun if you install AI mods. Without them...pointless, CA is just crap beyond believe at programming ai. One might think they figured it out by now. I mean after all TW is around for a few years now. But ...meh!

So all in all Rome... well i guess "meh!" says about enough about that game.

I actually would have written a positive review, i dont really care too much about the games graphic even though i dislike poor console Ports. But since i am playing this like every 5-8 years its in any case progress visually ;)

But what i really dislike is missing common sense. After hours of gameplay in becoming a legend i had a crash and it turns out some weird ass gamedesigner decided it would be very smart to turn autosave OFF by default. Probably assuming the game is stable any way why bother. Yeah right smartass...thanks, no thanks!

Just for that, out of spite and cause i cant stand stupidity like that...i will not recommend it. There you go and now fix it!

Just stay away for now... it needs some serious patching in terms of balancing and content. The game feels empty, a bit boring and simplistic. Imagine a Civ 5 with the biggest world imaginable and basically 8 opponents and a few citystates and no need for expansion because 4-5 strategically placed production centers can just aswell produce everything unlimited as could 40-50 cities. There just aint no need for a massive empire nor does it help to have one other than have it. Population is strictly based on your production buildings. Which means if you build 100 in 1 city its just aswell as building 1 each in 100 cities...well no its far superior in 1 city since the logistics are not really shining in this one here...

Its a shame, really, i wanted it to be amazing...i loved how they sold it but damn it fell short of what was promised. Its like this: Imagine the book of lord of the rings only a little shortened to lets say 50 pages for the entire trilogy. Thats how i feel about the overly simplistic approach. There is so much missing... it feels literally empty. Nothing is going on ever... a few carts, a few scouts, a few treasures and super human speed for units.

All i can say to the developers is: PLZ PLZ give this game more content and balancing patches otherwise...waste of time and money...
