Battle of Greece is definitely the best DLC for AoEII ever.

Don't buy this. This is literally just a cash grab. They just copied poor AoE1 into AoEII without proper changes, it still plays like that unsuccessful joke called AoE1. They did not add things normal for AoE2 for this DLC. No relics making money. No unique units. No unique technologies. RoR civs are completely same for most of time. Also they did not make a campaign for AoEII Roman civilization, which is only thing you wanted. No campaign = no reason to buy this. Compared to AoEII gameplay, "Return of Rome" aka AoEI copied into AoEII, is complete mess without proper gameplay. It is boring, it is unpolished, it is bad.

3/10 for good AoEII Roman civ (without campaign).

More detailed review:

It's still just as badly playable as the original first game, they just added the gates, formations and trade carts. But a lot of the mechanics that are just plain stupid and that bring the game down and made the first game basically forgettable remain, while the good stuff that made the second game great isn't found in this DLC. Not to mention the many new bugs and errors that the DLC added not only for the part copied from the first game, but directly into the second game.

The original campaigns from one are missing, that's not even a big shame because they were bad, but unfortunately the quality of the new campaigns is really not very good, compared to the DE DLC the missions are really bad, the missions are short and don't have a good design, which is a shame. It comes down to the fact that they didn't improve it much after the second game, so it's just limited in gameplay like the original one.

What sucks is that they didn't really work the Romans as a new civilization into the second game. The architecture is shared with other "southern" nations like the Italians, the special units (legionary, centurion) were already in the game before, only the player couldn't train them for any civilization, so the only new thing is actually a ship called the dromon, which is just a slightly different gun galleon for the Romans, Byzantium or Goths.

What's the worst part? They didn't even make a campaign for the Romans of the two! Yet there was a possibility to make a campaign from the late Empire period (5th century) for example a campaign with Aetius, said to be the last real Roman. Not only did they not make any new campaign for 2, but they also locked the Romans into ranked multiplayer! As a matter of fact. People who play AoEII expect content in the DLC according to their focus - SP players expect an interesting new campaign, and MP players expect a new nation for multiplayer. But this DLC didn't really bring anything.

So the only thing people got for 15 euros is a not-so-improved copy of the first game, only with three new campaigns and playable in the second game, and then one actually unusable civilization for the second game because it only works in skirmish against AI or MP and then appears in two campaigns as an AI enemy (Goths, Huns).

Overall, this feels more like some sort of patch or DLC for the first game (gates, formations, trade vehicles, new campaigns, one new nation Vietnam), but that has absolutely zero player base and so few people would buy it, so they made it like "DLC for the second game" because tens and tens of thousands of people play it every day and so many people will buy such DLC. Otherwise it's only at 45% on Steam and it's still going down, people are just unhappy with what they got, including me.

Can't feel Gothic from this. Please don't ruin Gothic more with this "remake".
