of course it is possible to play completely for free
(if you are honest with yourself ...that won't happen)
nevertheless you "will" buy something at some point

in my opinion it is only recommended if you are prepared to invest something (gambling addicts, keep your hands off)
that is not meant to be an incentive to buy something
just to save everyone from a rude awakening
and to protect them from a bad experience

you can't sugarcoat the fact that live pvp is pay2win
PvP is only a fraction of the available content
so don't let that get you down
ignore it and classify it as not to be taken seriously
you can get enough fun out of the other content

this is by far the most expensive game I have ever played
progress without any investment is slow (very very slow)
i would say it is so slow that you can say with certainty
that 80% of people lose interest as soon as they notice that they
are making almost no progress compared to others or getting fewer champions etc etc
(or wanted to focus on pvp and realized how much they had to catch up / the aforementioned rude awakening)

if you think it is not a problem for you not to buy anything
and the slow progress doesn't bother you
respect, you are one of the 20% (although I think my estimate is greatly exaggerated ;)

if you decide to play, inform yourself very well
and then inform yourself again & again

watch as many videos as you can to avoid mistakes

mistakes that will ruin your gaming experience

I am currently working with people from my clan on a database/gallery @ discord
to provide new players with a selection of working 3-star teams for the faction wars / dungeons etc.
(certainly not uninteresting for old players too)

if you are not familiar with graphics programs and don't know how to cut/insert parts with FN+Print

you can also send a screenshot of the successful fight and one from each participating champion (champion view screens)

then I cut the pieces together when I have time
