Far and away my favorite fighting game that I wish I've put more time into.

Movement is fun and deep, combos are extremely unique and feel rewarding, and player expression is on a level unlike any other game I've played. It's clear that the game is in the hands of a passionate team that listen intently to the competitive community (whether or not we like to admit it sometimes) and it fills me with joy that all these years later the game is still actively supported.

While the game may have especially brutal pressure that takes hard practice to get used to defending against and weilding properly, I think the reward of just beginning to utilize every system is so rich it's beyond worth the relatively tiny price tag.

So far the only roguelike that's kept me invested enough to finish it. Extremely satisfying gameplay, clever writing, and a wealth of different approaches you can take to each of your runs. Easily Supergiant's best work yet.

Early Access Review
Competitive RNG turned up to 11 in a highly entertaining way. Extremely interesting in how it puts players up against each other and makes coming up with an evolving strategy accessible and easy to understand but lends itself too well to feeling like you wasted your time every match you lose as they're each a huge time investment. Hopefully with future updates there will be balance patches and rule revisions that curb the frustration a bit, but as it currently stands it's very much a work in progress.

At first I felt like I was in no way the target audience for this game. I didn't grow up with retro FPS games, I generally dislike the Half-Life series, and while I've played games like Quake with friends I've had close to no experience with their single player modes. After getting stuck on E2M3 for a good month and not knowing if this game would be for me, boy am I glad I stuck to it.

Somehow no matter how high the stakes get and how cool every level seems the stakes get higher and the levels get cooler all the way to the last boss fight. Dusk nails cosmic and industrial horror perfectly, has some of the best "gotcha" moments I've ever experienced in a video game, and places a looming feeling of "I shouldn't be here" over you the entire game that grows with every stage in all of the best ways. The guns all feel punchy and satisfying to use, Andrew Hulshult's industrial metal soundtrack fits the carnage to a tee, and advanced movement is simple but feels amazing to do.

Dusk is a game that will make you excited to recommend to friends and giddy to talk about as each one who takes the dive finishes it. Dusk is amazing.

I'm usually opposed to reviewing games before I finish them, but considering that Chinese players have been review bombing this game due to the developers being outspoken against Chinese president and Winnie-the-Pooh impersonator Xi Jinping and I can already tell I'm going to love this game I decided I'd make an exception.

Do you like Taiwanese mythology? Do you like interesting horror scenarios with settings from actual dark and heavy times of a country's past? Do you like creepy stories that ooze with atmosphere in all the best ways? Then you'd like Detention.

This is the most fun I've had in any RPG for as long as I can remember. Moving around is fun, fighting things is fun, doing side quests is fun, solving puzzles is fun, the game is ridiculously fun.

Overall, if you're looking for something that nicely captures the atmosphere of the original with a few clever puzzles, get this on sale and enjoy it despite all of it's flaws.

That being said, I don't recommend this game because the few bugs and frusturating untested level design can't lead me to in good faith say this is worth your money. I don't dislike it because it's not the original, I never expected it to be, instead I dislike it because with every section that played well and had genuinely pleasing to solve puzzles, the more I wished every single section of the game was creative puzzles. The chase scenes, platforming, and poorly handled physics detract too much from this game.

This game is special and you should experience it, even if it ends up not being for you.

Beaitufully flawed. It tries harder to look pretty than it does to make the layout of the level clear, but the puzzles are clever and the game does a great job of teaching you concepts through gameplay which makes up for its many flaws.
