I bought this game at release on Xbox 360 and found it to be an incredible technical showpiece but not much fun to play. My 2nd crack at it on PC ended the same way. Red Faction Guerrilla's main hook is, even 10 years later, still a really good one: the destruction. The way you can destroy buildings bit by bit and watch them break apart and collapse is still pretty remarkable, and it's not scripted. it comes with limitations, like lots of copy pasted buildings and a generally dull setting, but honestly, it works. This game really does look the way one would expect a mining colony on Mars to look. There are several different sectors that all look different and have a different feel, so there is variety.

A game that lets you go nuts and blow up tons of stuff sounds like it should be a blast. But it's really not, thanks to the way the game forces you to play as a hit-and-run guerrilla. The enemies swarm and attack at the slightest provacation - it's like GTA where the alert level goes to 3 stars immediately. Their ferocity, accuracy, and tendency to spawn right behind you while you're dealing with enemies in front of you really sucks a lot of fun out of the game.

That said, the game does get a bit more manageable around mid-game, with better weapons and upgrades, until the enemies reset in the last sector with massive shields, super powerful weapons, and even more swarms. At that point I just turned off the game, it wasn't fun anymore. Ultimately, I'm not sure why Volition was so hesitant to let us just go nuts as a superpowerful one man army. There's a lot more here that gets in the way, like limited ammo counts, high upgrade costs, and confusing navigation, especially on the last sector. I wanted to love this game, and this version runs well and plays nicely with mouse and keyboard, but it's just frustrating to play and not fun.

I really liked Shadow Warrior 2 so I decided to give its predecessor a try. I like the game's linear approach - not necessarily better than SW2, just different and more in line with your normal FPS. Unfortunately that's about all I liked. I think there are too many problems with this game's controls, combat, level design, and pacing to make it worth a recommendation.

The problems start with the enemies. You get a bunch of easily killed fodder that runs up to you and swipes at you, and a bunch of very strong enemies with way too many hit points. For example, there's a shaman enemy that raises the fodder from the dead that take forever to kill. The encounters end up revolving around your ability to back away from the zombie enemies while trying to hit the shaman. It takes forever and becomes very tedious very quickly. It's just not very fun or very engaging. The game will then do things like throw multiple strong enemies which becomes a source of frustration. The combat encounters in general feel haphazard, and for a reboot of an old-school game, this is a dealbreaker.

As such the weapons don't end up feeling very strong or powerful. The katana doesn't feel particularly good slashing against enemies, and the strong ones (like this giant bull MFer) have massive AOE attacks that really make melee a poor option. Yes, there are a number of different special powers but they use awkward key/button combos that don't really fit into the flow of combat, nor is it easy to keep them all straight in the heat of combat. The other weapons don't feel particularly punchy either, even after upgrades. There's also a serious dearth of ammo in general, and I often had to spend my money on ammo in tough situations. Later levels tend to stack encounters really tightly without an opportunity to recharge/refill, and it hurts the game. All this combines to feel like a game I am not in control off, which is a serious problem for a FPS. The good thing is that the devs redeemed themselves nicely with the sequel which is an excellent game that nails encounters, weapon feel, and variety.

Shadow Warrior 2 is a really fun game. Lots of fast-paced action, huge amount of weapon and enemy variety, an interest elemental system that encourages experimentation, and big, open levels. The story is really goofy and silly but is easily skippable. The mechanics are really sharp, and it's a lot of fun to use the melee weapons which is relatively rare in this genre (although it was true of the prior SW game).

Shadow Warrior 2 is not perfect - the crafting system is a mess, and sometimes the levels can get repetitive, but overall the game works really well. I recommend it.

These nu-Lara games are, for whatever reason, right up my alley. I played a ton of Rise on Xbox One and enjoyed pretty much every minute of it, and I like them a lot more than Uncharted. For this game, Square handed off the reins to nu-Deus Ex developers Eidos Montreal. First thing first, Shadow of the Tomb Raider is a stunning game. The move from the icy waste of Siberia to the brilliant jungles of Latin America are very welcome, and the devs use the jungles to play with shadow and light in a very convincing way. It's really incredible looking.

The first two nu-Lara games were big, AAA, tentpole releases, and even though S-E positioned Shadow in this way, it generally doesn't feel like that. For one thing, the platforming and controls feel a bit looser and less polished than they do in the other games - I found myself weirdly failing to grab ledges and things of that sort. Also, the pacing feels off, in part because there seems to be much less of an emphasis on combat. A lot of people knocked the combat in these games, but the set pieces were huge and awesome and moved the story through nicely. The mechanics were also really solid and it was actually a lot of fun to play. Here there's not just less combat, but more of a focus on stealth. They give you some new tools, like hiding in muddy walls, but I'd rather have the old set pieces.

In every other way, this game is very similar to Rise. The crafting system, collecting junk, unlocking base camps, solving crypts and tombs, learning languages, you've seen this all before. Oh, and it's a bit weird that so much of Shadow's game systems are in service to the combat system (the skill trees and weapon upgrades) when there is seemingly so little of it.

I liked TR2013 and I liked Rise, so I like this and recommend it, but I would honestly recommend starting with TR2013 if you haven't as it is still a very good and beautiful game that nails this formula pretty well.

I really like Prey. It is in the same "immersive sim" genre as games like Deus Ex, System Shock 2, Dishonored, Bioshock, etc. These games are characterized by hub level design, extensive character customization, and an open-ended design that encourages multiple ways to fight, solve puzzles, explore, etc. Prey is obviously invoking System Shock in its setting, which is a futuristic space station where (of course!) everything has gone wrong. The space station is really cool, with lots of different areas and a very believable structure. Each area is its own little hub with enemies, NPCs, side quests, and secrets. It's a lot of fun to explore, and the game encourages you to go back and forth over time.

The character customization is split between human powers and typhon powers. The human powers are like a light version of Deus Ex, with increasing psi/health/stamina, hacking, strength for carrying, and so forth. The game doesn't have weapon specialties like you would see in Deus Ex, so it's purely about how you want to solve puzzles and navigate through the world. There is a sneak ability but IMO sneak is underdeveloped and basically useless here. The typhon powers are similar to Bioshock, with different types of blasts (electric, kinetic), traps, a shield, etc.

Anyone who knows the genre should be able to get a picture of how it plays from here, and it's all good stuff. I will say though, that the story is pretty unengaging. It's definitely a weak point compared to the other games I mentioned in this review. The things you end up doing are mostly around fixing and fabricating stuff, the other NPCs, even the main ones, seem almost like an afterthought.

That said, I really do think this game is a must-play for anyone who liked this genre, and especially if you were left a bit cold by the recent Deus Ex game.

I played this years ago when it was GFWL. It didn't get great reviews but I really liked it. The setting is cool (and a nice change of pace from usual RE) and the shooting is well-done. People didn't like the co-op when the game came out but it is well-done and the way they encourage multiple play throughs is pretty novel. At some point I'll play it again to get the Steam cheevos. Worth checking out if you want a solid action game or a good co-op game that's different from the usual.

The original Rez came out 16 years ago for Dreamcast and was immediately recognized as a groundbreaking and innovative experience. How cool is it that, in 2017, you can play this game with state of the art technology and it’s still amazing? This game is incredible in VR - one of the coolest game experiences I can remember. The brilliant art design and music pop and the game sucks you in completely. I can’t help but think that this was the way Mizguchi envisioned it all those years ago. A must own in VR.

This is one of the best games out there. It features a huge open world, tons of content, sharp combat mechanics, a cool story, and lots of things to do. It's really easy just to get lost in it while the hours drift away. I've been playing FPS games since the dawn of time and this is one of the best. It basically throws you on this island and lets you go about it on your own way. Regular missions are linear, but those turn out to be a small fraction of the run time. Everything else - taking over strongholds, completing side activities, hunting for doodads - lets you do it at your own pace. The game works as a combat shooter but definitely leans more towards the stealth side - there's more than a bit of Predator in the way you can sneak through the jungle and then quickly dispatch enemies. It's great.

If I had to make any complaint, it is that the leveling system isn't balanced at all - the game features two large islands but I had most of the upgrades before I even set foot in the second island. People who do a more thorough job of clearing out side missions would likely have them all even before that. There is a possibility this was intentional - the game just gets better the more tools one has at their disposal, and perhaps this was Ubisoft's way of rewarding thorough players. It is still noticeable, though.

In the end, this is just a minor quibble. On the whole, this game is amazing and a must-play for anyone who likes open world games or shooters.
