nearly a decade in the making and what comes out is still undercooked.

marred with high employee turnover, team shifts, direction changes, and the lead creatives either being fired or resigning, dragon age the veilguard is a shallow shell of what it could have been that leaves nothing but a bitter taste in your mouth once you're finished.

dragon age has always been a game full of complex character relationships, high stakes choices, and a real focus on tone and atmosphere. the fourth game was an ambitious one to begin with, breaking away from the anthology style and instead acting as a direct sequel to dragon age: inquisition. but it definitely doesn't feel like it's part of the same franchise.

the entries have always been separate from each other, whether by tone or gameplay loop or aesthetic, it's to be expected when a series is anthology focused. but some things need to stay steady to identify them all as part of the same thing. it's safe to say that da:tv lacks a lot of what most people know dragon age to have.

the characteristic complexity that weaves the characters, plot, and lore into a game that feels like it is led by your choices is nowhere to be found. "shallow and shoehorned in" can honestly accurately describe a lot of what you see. from the large stake choices you're forced to make, to the main antagonists of the story, to the social commentaries in the companion quests, none of them feel finished or careful enough like how they did in previous entries.

all of these things are the lifeblood of dragon age. doing sidequests to get to know your companions better have been in there since origins. commentary about sexuality and gender have always been in dragon age. talks of culture, of religion, of power, of anything that we can experience in the real world have been weaved into the story in ways that made the world of thedas alive.

but da:tv handles all of these clumsily, with some issues that were the lifeblood in previous games like religion or power or social hierarchy being completely absent, and others like gender, sexuality, identity, and self-worth being poorly handled. any and all writing that surrounded social commentary were so shallow it felt like they were only there to check off boxes from a quota and not to approach it with any real care or thought, or to actually take into account what has already been established by previous entries.

it was immensely disappointing to see a series i had an unhealthy obsession with get stained with a lackluster and shallow feeling entry. i can only hold out hope that maybe the fifth one in the series can fix the blunders this game has had, but knowing EA and Bioware, a da:5 probably won't happen, and this was likely the final nail in the coffin for a series that i long held as one of my favorites.

tldr;
it's hard to separate the entry from the rest of the series when the game itself is supposed to be a direct sequel. what was hyped up to be an intense lore and story driven game ended up being shallow and underbaked. while the gameplay itself was fun and engaging, the story and characters and choices -- the "glue" of a dragon age game -- weren't. if you just want a fun hack and slash style fantasy game with a build-your-own kit system, then sure. but if you wanted to get invested in the story, either as a returning or new dragon age fan, then this isn't the game for that.

my all time favorite game.
breathtaking and simple art direction that ages nicely, a very loving community, and music that creates an atmosphere that can't really be described.

i feel like this game had a reputation for having horrible people in the community, but if you avoid certain folks and are aren't an awfully toxic player, the people are wonderful. a surprising chunk of them are either queer or a furry, which as someone who is Queer and a Furry i think that's cool.

gameplay wise, the basic mechanics are easy to understand, and once you get past being scared of the game it's really fun. theres lots of skills to create a build that caters to your play style, and although it can be a bit grindy, you aren't pressured into micro-transactions because all of the original non-licensed perks, characters, and cosmetics can be earned.

all in all, a fun and unique game with a nice enough community.

red is sus

but seriously, fun game for the sake of being a fun game. easy to learn, easy to play, entirely enjoyable without any level progression or SSR you typically see in other multiplayer games. micro transactions in-game aren't for loot boxes or anything, its just for a fun little companion you get to have run around with you.

has some accessibility/connection issues, but the devs have confirmed they're working on it already and so i'm excited for that.

10/10. most fun ive had in a multiplayer game in a while
