Really fun flesh eating lemmings-like game that goes on sale at such a ridiculously low price I felt so guilty for buying it that I bought copies for friends and upgraded my edition and even then it hardly costed anything.

Initially held off since I've been burned out on power fantasy zombie games and the trailers really only show zombies eating people.. however a negative review won me over when said author complained about it not being a relaxing game and that it was something that made him wanna pull his hair out, aka; Lemmings!

Zombie Night Terror hits so many sweet notes right on the spot in all the right ways,.. the aesthetic is closer to 80's horror than it is to "retro homage games" which is a funny thing to say about a game that has pixel graphics, however the pixel graphics are nothing in comparison to the layers and layers of special touches that come together and serve as a means to achieve the ends, and not as the ends in itself..

The atmosphere, the black and white colors used for the settings and the VERY RED blood that gets splashed around the scenes whenever someone gets bitten... the horror synth music and in some cases upbeat synthwave. The throw away one liners between the soon to be victims feel like the throw away one liners from the movies of old.. catching you off guard while you're trying to solve something that is essentially a lemmings puzzle. It's great.

The scenarios are pretty much 80's zombie styled, though the zombies are not very bright they are atleast consistent and you get blessed with a pause feature to help with the micro... you can time things perfectly so that they bash doors down at just the right moment to catch whoever is behind them off guard, you can feed enemies some cannon fodder to divert their attention so that some ghouls can reach them from another angle... it's forgiving enough that you can still lead messy charges that end up in phyrric victories and play with your brain food a bit before eating it.

You can make one zombo jump and the other sprint so that while a heavily armed soldier is dealing with the ground zombies one descends from above and bites them, you can make zombies in your shuffling horde explode and watch your frontline get catapulted into crowds of enemies (and explode these too and watch the humans get catapulted into different directions and rise again as zombos... or you can leave them and let them eat their victim's brains).. watching people get bitten in a heated battle; fall down, then rise again as a zombie and continue biting is beautifully cathartic.. as the levels get more complex to the verge of becoming puzzles the game doesn't forget this detail..

The levels themselves are very intricately crafted, can be achieved in a multitude of ways, they're more than forgiving at first, but then they slowly get more brutal but rewarding to finish. You will reach a certain "wall" where you have to poke the level in different ways before giving a serious attempt at it, and this is where the fun really begins in my opinion.

TLDR: if you want to remember your childhood where you picked up Lemmings and regretted it and you love B grade zombie films then this is a must have. If you enjoyed Lemmings this a must, if you want a zombie power fantasy then wait for a sale so that you don't feel too burned when you find out that the humans fight back (since they're trying to survive in the world that you're terrorizing, afterall)..

Since this game sells itself as a spiritual successor I'm going to review it as such..

Now that both Langrisser 1&2 have been released on Steam as a single package there's really no reason to get this unless you've played that to completion and even then this could leave a bad taste in your mouth.. there's not a single unique mechanic of it's own that wasn't copy pasted from it's inspirations except for base building which really just serves to slow the pace down, it's a soulless clone with gratingly inoffensive bland characters that look like they were incomplete templates written for a rejected Nickelodeon pilot episode and instead got reskinned with fantasy assets featuring a main heroine who gives you no reason to care for her, all coated with the visuals and detailing of a flashgame from 2010 era Newgrounds and called a game.

The rock paper scissors mechanics are almost as "safe" as the storytelling and even more simplified than the games it's imitating by a lack of variety made all the more apparent due to lack of other selling points and things going on to keep your brain functioning in a universe you don't care about.

Just play Langrisser instead.. or enjoy your more accessible "spiritual successor" i guess.

First time I feel compelled to make a negative review... so that's saying something I guess. This game has some great visuals, but it doesn't redeem the amount of frustration you'll experience in the "gameplay", the trailer is misleading which is unforgiveable and I feel burned because of it, but I actually feel even more burned over the fact that I wasted 8 hours on this with the hope that it'd get better than over the money I spent on it.

The first level was okay, but after that the 'gameplay' relies too much RNG, not in the good way Darkest Dungeon implemented it either (where adequate preparation can soften the impact of the RNG, as well as the fact that Darkest Dungeon seems fair in it's own morbid way because the enemy can get ♥♥♥♥♥♥ over by RNG just as much as you can), and unlike Darkest Dungeon the RNG here doesn't add to the replay value, after you finish a scenario here all you remember is what a painful experience you had to endure... and in Gods Will Be Watching the RNG is on the forefront, and often the deciding factor on winning a scenario is pure luck. You'll also get a lot of scenarios here that require you to gamble with an 85% chance of losing the gamble, and if you lose a scenario you lose 30-45 minutes of progress.

Overall, you feel like you're in a RNG casino, and instead of playing with money you're playing with time that you can be using to play something better with more depth to the gameplay. GwbW left such an awful taste in my mouth that it's hard playing anything where you see characters from a sideview with pixelated graphics.

Don't buy it, not even if it comes on sale.

Excellent and unpretentious top down roguelike dungeon crawler that's over the top when it comes to fast paced extremely satisfying and gory gameplay. This game is especially good for when you want to sit down and have a quick instant fix of fast action, because matches mostly range between 20-45 minutes, and can even last longer depending on how much you want to level up before facing the boss.

The atmosphere is on point in terms of making you feel as if you're exploring a dank dark dungeon that's haunted by an ancient evil presence, the spirits that haunt you, follow you and possess traps and summon monsters only add to this feeling... there are some references to Lovecraft's work in the level names which is always a nice touch, the rooms and map layouts are randomly generated and every playthrough is different, but unlike many other games with randomly generated rooms you don't start noticing the same variation of a room being repeated until maybe 5 or so hours, there isn't an arbituary set pattern in which you experience rooms either, the only thing that's consistent is that each floor has one store (with each floor having randomly selected different items, making way for different character builds which further ensures each playthrough is unique), one portal that leads to the final boss and one exit that leads to the floor below.... anyway regardless, even if the room layouts aren't always unique... the map layouts are always unique, the repetition of rooms isn't something you're bothered by because you're too busy trying to get the final shot on the hero or you're the hero desperately trying to cling to every last inch of your humanity and you really become absorbed in the addictive gameplay... it's also worth mentioning that the developers are awesome dudes who are very responsive to the community, always respond positively to ideas, negative criticism, and are still constantly showcasing screenshots of different environments / room layouts that are in progress so you can expect to see much more variation in that department in the future, at the rate I see them posting screenshots of new room types, my point on rooms repeating themselves once or twice per match will probably be completely and utterly void by the time this game gets a release... it's also really fun to play single player even if it's designed for co op!

PS: I love the skeletons to death, whenever they laugh or use their ranged attacks where they throw a bone at you, I get a flashback of Evil Dead III: Army of Darkness where the skeleton says to Ash; "I've got a bone to pick with you!" :P
