For newcomers, don't expect great variety. KF2 is in essence a co-op survival with a limited amount of enemies and weapons and not in a bad way. It is brilliant in it's simplicity. This second iteration is a much more polished, developed, and updated version of the original. The quantity of enemies and the nature of attacks makes this game much more tactical than other games allowing for teams to support each other via their chosen perks. This early access version is still limited in the maps, weapons, and characters, but seems promising. It really feels like Co-op Doom3 on bath salts.

For fans of KF (1) it's definitely worth the purchase, though don't expect the completeness of the first one (especially if you bought some DLC and have played the seasonal maps of the original). Due to some changes in how devs have setup a starting character, be prepared to feel that low-level anxiety of a level 4 wave (from the original) right off the bat. Graphics are amazing.

TL-DR: This game is metal!
