I was in a discord call one day when I noticed something, a "adult visual novel" on the front page of steam. Reading the reviews though, i was shocked that instead of weird, horny gremlins, it was a bunch of people saying how invested they got in the story and how they ended out crying by the end, commending the game on its great storytelling. At this point it just registered, we have to play it, so my friend Ethan spends the money and buys it for me, with the condition I play it all the way through and write a real, genuine review of the game by the end of it.

The first hour or so (which took us around 3 hours to actually complete because we were joking around) were, well, funny. We were joking about everything and not taking it seriously, laughing at the events that were so unrealistic yet hilarious to us as it was plot for what we thought was essentially a porn game. Joking about how we "have to take it seriously or we will never get invested." We had people jump in and out of the discord call, tuning in for small glimpses of the story as we all laughed along.

Slowly but surely, we had a group of three people, those two would stick around for the entirety of the game, sharing the experience with me, and we slowly realized, our decisions were changing. We used to pick based on how we could become the best harem god but slowly, it changed. We picked decisions that we thought would impact the characters in the ways we wanted to, some of those being rejecting Leah and picking options favoring Megan , we actually started caring about the characters, wanting the best to work out for them. Our opinions and actions changed, we committed to finishing the game in a good way, not just picking options based on some random person in the calls opinion. The thing we had joked about started happening.

This is a huge leap in the review, skipping a large time frame of on and off playing the game, because all of that is nothing in comparison to the later sessions, but it did its job. It planted seeds, it made us think about some of the things, when crazy ♥♥♥♥ would happen I even mentioned it to a friend outside of discord, (he had been in a call as we played before, but had dipped for a while) and it was really, really weird. A porn game has me actually invested? I thought the extents it would go to would be things somewhat minor like Peter calling Liam N**ger, and us slappin him up, or basic drama like cheating in relationships, how can you have drama if it isn't garbage petty stuff like that? but oh boy, did things take a trip off the deep end.

Maybe two nights and we covered so, so much. The game we had joked about and ♥♥♥♥♥♥ around in suddenly became serious almost, topics were brought up that really hit home with me, and the whole experience became something else. It wasn't a porn game anymore, it was something else, something I don't think I can easily describe because its so convoluted. It wasn't real, but it wasn't quite fake either, the dynamics I thought were at one point cheesy really began to seem genuine, there were situations that I had found myself in in real life, and conversations with realistic responses that I was previously wasn't seeing, I had developed a respect for it, and I had to see it through, all three of us did.

The topics covered, or even mentioned or hinted at Kidnapping, Arson, Stalking, Drug Dealing, Corruption, Mental illness, Cancer, Murder, Rape went beyond anything I could have ever thought or expected from this $10 porn game my friend bought me. Decisions really really hit at this point, it wasn't easy anymore, we put thought into it and really thought it through. We regretted previous decisions as it later came back to bite us, and the stakes just kept ramping up. Twists and turns constantly, literally unpredictable and it was insane how invested we became, it was like reading a really good book, or watching seasons of a TV show waiting for the climactic conclusion, but it felt like more even, because we were in control to an extent, and the ending literally left us shocked. The end with liam doing his little thing lightened the mood, and so did seeing it was happy but we still felt really, really moved

Acting Lessons on the surface seems like just another random porn game, or adult visual novel, or harem simulator, or whatever you want to call it, but diving into it, it was a really interesting, captivating experience, and I'm happy I played it.

10/10, best of the genre (not like I play many)
