Subahibi should need no introduction, commonly considered a kamige by the visual novel community and created by one of the most prolific visual novel writers, SCA-DI. Subahibi is one of the two “masterpiece” visual novels that SCA-DI has made, the second being ‘Sakura no Uta’ Subahibi is a much shorter visual novel than Sakura no Uta being 50 hours with 7 chapters and multiple endings. If you plan on playing Subahibi I recommend playing through every single alternate ending before the true ending of the given chapter. Also, Subahibi has a complex meta-narrative that I think to truly experience you must make and research theories to create a solid understanding of the narrative for yourself.

Subahibi starts off its prologue with simple slice of life that many will most likely find boring, but later on that prologue becomes what I believe to be one of the best chapters. Though, Subahibi kicks off in the second chapter with an insane surprise and sets off the story with haste. One thing I’d like to say is that Subahibi is nowhere near for the light of heart due to its large portion of very depraved scenes that I don’t think most will be able to handle. A lot of the story of Subahibi is fleshed out the more you read and that made me appreciate Subahibi's every revelation along the way.

The Subahibi cast is absolutely phenomenal and is able to present one of the most complex dynamics in fiction. Our 3 main narrators Mamiya Takuji, Minakami Yuki, and Yuuki Tomosane are all beautifully written characters and are pieced together through the story amazingly.. Subahibi also produces one of the most creative and eerie characters I’ve been able to experience, Otonashi Ayana is such an insanely creative character that I can barely comprehend correctly.

Tomosane had become my #1 character in fiction right after finishing the Wonderful Everyday ending of Jabberwocky II and he deserves his spot without a doubt. Tomosane is an absolutely beautiful character that I was able to connect to on a personal level and was able to leave a significant impact on my person, even greater than Araragi Koyomi. Tomosane’s conclusion was also what I believe to be the greatest and be the nail in the coffin for cementing him as my #1.

Now, I’d like to hit you with a spoiler warning because I want to go quite in depth into Ayana’s character. Ayana is easily my 2nd favorite character of the visual novel, not because she was able to leave an impact on me, but because she is such a unique character that to gain an actual understanding of her is near impossible. As to how I interpret Ayana? I think Ayana is a passive observer who wishes to bring no harm to any of the protagonists and rather tries to help them at times. Why? Because Ayana is everyone, she is a reference to H.P. Lovecraft’s Yoh-Sothoth. Ayana is the all-in-one being that is the true creator of the Subahibi verse and that the story happens inside of her head and the End Sky II ending is the true ending of Subahibi, leaving Ayana off disconnecting herself from her creations and continuing a story with her true self as the protagonist.

So happy I was finally able to experience this visual novel and it's beautiful cast of characters. Subarashiki Hibi is definitely an aquired taste, if that makes sense because of some of its an extremely odd aspects. I actually almost dropped Subahibi multiple times, especially during It's my Own Invention because of it's oversaturation of h-scenes, despite that I was able to push through and be able to be enlightened by it's beautiful conclusion. I won't really "endorse" playing Subahibi, but I do think its definitely worth your time for it's amazing story.

Live happily!
