For a solo student dev's second game, having proper online multiplayer and enemy AI is extremely impressive! I'm very excited to see any future projects 🫡

All the new stuff is really cool! The new content definitely makes the game feel fresh and exciting, and for me it almost gave me the feeling I was playing for the first time again with all the interesting new maps and enemies. Railgunner is also just an absolutely insane character.

Not only that, but the Void Items. GOD the Void items are sick as hell. I don't know who at Hopoo games thought turning lens-makers into literal one-shot devices was a good idea, but I'm definitely not complaining.

Every run starts off very simple, just you casually fighting a couple of enemies, on a map that's decently-sized, and a small handful of items to forage.
However, as time progresses, the simple skirmishes with a few foes become more frequent, as their armies increase in both strength and size. Your character's increased movement through leveling and items gradually makes the map feel smaller than it really is. And speaking of items, your stash of colourful trinkets of various rarities and benefits continues to grow ever so quickly.
Eventually, you'll be facing endless confrontation from hostiles at every angle, elegantly jumping from battle to battle against hordes of ruthless enemies substantially larger than you. The map will begin to feel tiny as your sheer speed makes traveling long distances completely futile, and the items in your possession become innumerable. With every attack, a plethora of damage numbers and particle effects shower your screen in a colourful cacophony of death and destruction. Enemies will appear on your screen only to play their death animation mere milliseconds after, causing the complete mass-genocide of various wildlife. Your sheer euphoric power-trip reaches such an otherworldly intensity that you're basically playing God.

Then suddenly you get one-shot from an enemy off-screen. Truly the average run of Risk of Rain 2.

In terms of an actual review, I think the game is a MASSIVE step-up from RoR 1. The transition from 3D does not feel gimmicky in the slightest - it fits the RoR formula perfectly. Every survivor feels extremely unique from each other and all provide a different way of playing the game (the new update's Bandit port from RoR 1 is absolutely fantastic as well). I highly recommend it to anyone who's even remotely interested in roguelikes!

Darkest Dungeon is, to be blunt, infuriating as all hell.

Your party members will die. A lot. Doesn’t help that it’s permadeath as well. Enemies will crit for 75% of your health. Your leper will miss 4 attacks in a row. Your occultist will heal for 0 with bleed twice in the same fight. Your hopeless vestal will skip her turn the second someone’s on death's door. The RNG in this game will feel as if it’s some corporeal entity watching your screen, waiting for the perfect moment to completely destroy you.

But when you come back to that dungeon, that boss, the same one that shredded your highwayman, the one who caused a heart-attack to your plague doctor, the one who wiped your entire party, and you finally triumph after hours of agony, stress, and despair, after hours of meticulously formulating the perfect party, it will all be worth it. Every last second of it.

A moment of valor shines brightest against a backdrop of despair - The Ancestor
