A physics sandbox that lets you play pretty much every board game ever made, for FREE. I would happily buy this for 3x the price, three times over.

Rust is now a PVP sandbox with a worthless survival mechanic.

The community is NOT toxic, it is a pure calcium deposit in your urethra and a brain tumor in your newborn son. I am genuinely concerned for the underage people who play this game.

Crafting system, despite being on its fifth (?) iteration, is still exactly the same in principle: it forces players to take on Rust as a part-time job. Notice how in-game, all players with large bases/good weapons have 2000+ hours minimum. Yes, they are very good at PVP, but amassing resources for guns, bases, upkeep, etc. is separate-- it is not skill, it is time invested. A successful Rust run (starting from wipe day and reaching the end-game of raiding) requires, I would say, a minimum of 1.5 hours a day (if a monthly server) to probably 3-4 hours a day if a weekly server.

When I played Rust, I would WAKE UP IN REAL LIFE thinking of what needed to be done that day-- mine more stone, smelt more sulfur, make more gunpowder, gather more scrap so we can get that AK, and yes, actual gameplay too. We've all had games we were excited to play and woke up thinking about. Rust is the only game where I woke up thinking about things I -HAD- to do, and if I didn't, I would lose all my progress and have to wait till the next wipe to start over.

I've removed a lot of negativity from my original review because negative reviews always just sound like personal butthurt. It isn't. Try the game for yourself. It's fun, but it requires so much time to make it fun, that until I'm unemployed, single, or both, I can't play Rust.

I guess Rust is kind of like Fortnite, but for people who've already hit puberty.

The little things that make me love DOI:

- You can reload the M1 Garand before emptying the magazine
- The moment in between a Stuka siren and you knowing you're dead
- You can pick up live grenades and throw them back
- When another player says "Yes" his character gives a thumbs-up
- You can put a bayonet on a shotgun
- When radiomen speak their mic is filtered to sound like... a radio
- Voice chat is local only and distance-based

It also has a full-blown WW1 overhaul and is basically what Day of Defeat and Day of Defeat: Source's sequel would have been.

Fourteen years later, this game still holds up as a great marriage of arcade action and realism, much like what makes CS 1.6 legendary and still one of Steam's top played games today. Very teamwork oriented, where barely anyone pays attention to KD ratio but rather to capturing the next objective. WW2 is a great theme as always, great selection of weapons, and graphics are decent enough (though a little dull) considering its age.

The only flaw is that the game is mostly dead. There's 2-3 active servers, and everything else is either bot servers or being hosted on another continent. The community is small, but friendly. Despite this, I just started playing in January 2017 and am still having a blast.

Still worth it in 2021. L4D1 has subtle differences in design, atmosphere, overall feel, gameplay, and flow that still make it the superior way to experience the original campaigns. Don't listen to idiots telling you during sales "omg dont spend the extra $2 on this dead game L4D2 is the same!!!!" (who, btw, often haven't played one minute of L4D1 in their life) It isn't.

For those who haven't played, an amazing, immersive, wonderfully well-thought out co-op zombie shooter.
