What it is:
The greatest RPG ever made and the best writing to ever grace gaming as a medium. Imagine a noir detective story written by Monty Python based on Pixar's Inside Out and set in a world dreamed up by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. With David Lynch as guest writer. While everyone is drunk, high, or both. Then fit all that inside the skeleton of Planescape: Torment - except with all the combat removed.

What it does well:
  • Incredible writing that encompasses so many genres and takes them all across the finish line in style. This is a grim police procedural mixed with a rip-roaring comedy, served with a side dish of existential drama and a healthy dollop of top-shelf surrealism.
  • A world that goes a step or ten beyond the tired adjectives "living, breathing" even though the vast majority of the NPCs don't even move around. DIsco Elysium seems to be set in a familiar world at first sight, but dig deeper and you will keep running into surprising details, intriguing discoveries, a fascinating history, and plenty of things that simply are not quite right.
  • A story that is genuinely malleable to reflect who you are as a character (or player). Nearly every objective has multiple solutions, many of which are laugh-out-loud funny. While the facts of the case are settled, how you approach and interpret those facts are entirely up to you.
  • A cast of characters that is unfailingly memorable. Your partner, Kim Kitsuragi, would be a solid shout for the best NPC ever written.
  • The skill system is a monumental, one-of-a-kind achievement. 24 skills across 4 categories determine how smart, sensitive, strong, and agile you are. And they all talk. The higher they are, the more often they pipe up, and the more extreme your options become.
  • There is essentially no combat in the game. Everything takes place in and is resolved through dialogue, and the dialogue is almost entirely divine. This is the ultimate proof that you can make incredible long-form games without relying on violent interactions as the primary language.
  • A painterly visual style that is pleasing to the eye, dripping with atmosphere, and runs well on virtually any setup to boot.
  • A similarly atmospheric original score - with some delightfully surprising vocal tracks dropped in at just the right moment.

What it fluffs:
  • A few bugs here and there, and some dialogue that prematurely refers to things you haven't done (but maybe should have already done).
  • The lead up to the finale is a bottleneck of sorts for the story, and you could be left with only save scumming to rely on. Throw some points into the Shivers skill just to be safe.
  • Autosaves are few and far between. Since you can run out of health or morale in so many situations, the autosaves are just not reliable enough and you can lose hours of progress without careful manual saving.

Technical stuff:
  • It works on Intel integrated graphics. Need I say more? And it actually looks good too - thanks to the aforementioned painterly style.
  • No ultrawide support, but it plays just fine in black-boxed 16:9 and the developers have committed to adding support in the months to come.

Recommendation:
If you like RPGs and reading, Disco Elysium is paradise in video game format. While it doesn't quite live up to the developer's promises in terms of length - this is a 30-hour affair rather than a sprawling epic double or triple that runtime - it nails everything else at an unprecedented level of quality. It is mysterious, funny, touching, horrifying - sometimes all at once - and would be worth a buy at absolutely any price.
