Doesn't seem like there is actually any sort of dynamic AI. It is all scripted. This is probably why there is no skirmish against AI equipped with custom decks, and why friendly AI in skirmish has been delayed; it seems likely that the skirmish mode is heavily scripted with the intent of making it appear otherwise. This is a really big problem if you're looking for a singleplayer "sandbox" experience. I'm really not sure what they were thinking, basic dynamic AI is standard to every other RTS I've played.

If I turn out to be wrong, or this changes, I'll change my review. But as of now, I have to spend hours and hours learning to script their AI to approach something that I can do in every other RTS game out of the box.

The editor itself is good and very detailed, but it should not be necessary to spend 5 hours hacking together a scenario to pretend to play a really bad skirmish.

also I spent 3 hours trying to figure out the scenario editor and as such couldn't return the game if I wanted to LOL

Best war sim out there, hands down. Graphics seem dated at first, but it's a MASSIVE improvement over Combat Mission, and you'll adapt to it.

Incredible attention to detail.

The sound effects are pretty awful, but there are mods that fix this (I use RukiSoundMod), and they're very easy to install. No digging around in any files.

Don't worry about the UI or trying to figure out how to actually win... I spent the first 40 hours more or less clueless about how to actually play the game. The fun here comes from watching your units do their thing. Eventually, you'll pick up on how to do stuff, and then you can spend time watching your units do their thing more effectively.
One of the only truly realistic games out there.

1.0 removed the ability to execute civilians, so no more death squad sim. Guns all look and feel the same, half are just AR platform. why do people call this game controversial again? what about this is controversial? you play one-dimensional good guys and shoot evil pedophiles and cultists. What is wrong with playing the game in a way that is slightly different than intended. What actual harm is there to the consumer if the game allows you to kill civilians? None, of course. It's not even realistic, how is it at all realistic to have a swat sniper trained on you at all times, waiting to kill you if you so much as execute ONE measly innocent civilian (let alone those caught in the crossfire). I sincerely cannot picture the mind of a potential buyer of this game who is APPALLED by the mere possibility of civilian casualties. idk man if i find a mod that actually fixes this i might play again, but there are a bunch of other problems that make it tough to enjoy. I guess with enough modding I could fix some of those.

finally in a good spot, multiplayer wise. Mods are getting there too (check out RHS). It feels pretty polished in some areas, looks great and runs well. I haven't had as many desync issues either. I'd recommend for multiplayer, maybe pass for singleplayer right now... AI seems to have improved I think, but still not very good. They still can't drive vehicles.
