Normally with these sim games, I hate restarting over and over, but I love that you can sell the prisons and start again with a huge wad of moolah

+ The music is perfect.
+ The gameplay is tough but rewarding.

- I wish it was longer
- Where's the sequel?

My life with video games started back in the mid-80s with a BBC Acorn Electron. My favourite game at the age of 6 or 7 was called Boxer, a pixelated annoyance, but I loved it. VVVVVV calls back to those blocky Commodore 64 days with amazing chiptune music that you will have in your head for months after playing the game.

You control Captain Viridian, lost in an alternative universe where instead of jumping, you can control gravity. He must search for his (largely inept) crew who is scattered around the open world. While it is technically a platformer, it really is more of a puzzle and memory game more than anything else. Some of the puzzles will annoy the living ♥♥♥♥ out of you and take a few (hundred) tries to get past, but the game rewards you with more puzzles, more fun, and more great music.

The game lasts maybe 2 hours if you play in one sitting, but for me, this 2 hour playthrough was one of the most compelling and influential 2 hours of my life. Before I played this game (which I got in the Humble Indie Bundle #3 in 2011,) I was an AAA-title-only kind of man and a console gamer. Now, I largely stay away from the top games and stick to the indie titles that give me new and interesting ways to escape reality.

I have lost count of how many times I have played this game. I have had times where people walking past my "office" (My comfy chair in the living room) when I have been playing this game on my laptop, where people would stand and watch me play the game in a daze. If you are someone who is all about modern graphics, you have probably already made up your mind regarding these types of game, but for anyone with an open mind or a love for something different, this game is worth any value of money you throw at it. I love it.

This review, along with all of my others, is part of a mission I have given myself; to play and review my entire Steam catalogue (of over 1,000 games at writing.) Follow me on Twitter at @bearsito. Or not. Up to you really.
