A platforming "rage" game, where really the level of rage is left up to you. With the ability to set your own checkpoints as you go, devastating falls can be undone with a short nap, which takes this game from "wildly challenging" to "actually quite approachable." You do have a life system, but without spoiling too much, they are not as much of a hindrance as you might originally guess. If you like platformer games but dislike the punishing falls of the rage game genre, give this one a try- it bridges the gap quite well.

While the initial area screenshots definitely give the impression of the typical 'random objects thrown around' platforming, there is so much more to the game over the many future levels, each with their own aesthetics and vibe. Secrets and collectibles are everywhere. My 10 hours have only been spent in the first about 40% of the game and there are still a few challenges in those first handful of areas that I haven't done. The speedrun achievements and challenges are REALLY no joke though, and probably will be too hard for anyone not actually serious about running the game which I do think is a bit unfortunate.

The music in this game is also incredible, the effort in the soundtrack alone is wild.

I will say there is some jank to the physics interactions sometimes, but for a game like this that is typically part of the charm. It's not super prevalent but if you try weird things you will probably get some weird interactions so just be ready for that. Overall though, this game has so much more polish than other similar games.

This game was a critical hit for me. Everything I loved about Hollow Knight taken to the next level in a way that matched the type of games I adore. Genuinely a 10/10 for me, and not a score I take lightly.

I reached 100% completion blind and it was one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had. That being said, if you are someone who hates backtracking, hates searching for hidden walls, or hates not knowing where to find that one last upgrade.... that's fine! I'm not going to say something like "this game isn't for you" because it CAN still be for you. Looking at a guide or a map is 100% fine if you find yourself not having fun anymore during this process. The blind experience was super fun for me, but if it isn't fun for you, don't push yourself to suffer through it - you'll enjoy the game a lot more if you get some nudges from friends or a guide if you start feeling frustrated.

Where I DO think the game might not be for someone is in its difficulty. I love hard games, and this is a very punishing game. Bosses, normal enemies, and even environmental hazards are often dealing two hits of damage to you. This may be to help the player lean into the fantastic movement and acrobatic controls during combat and to encourage playing differently than Hollow Knight (where you would often mash attack right next to an enemy until it dies, even if you get hit once or twice. Doing that in Silksong will usually get you killed, and fast.) It's a different playstyle and one that takes some adjusting but I found it extremely rewarding. The sense of euphoria as you beat a boss or make it through an area is heightened as a result of this added challenge; this is truly a world out to get you.

The new systems and additions from Hollow Knight are very fun to experiment with. Surprisingly great character writing, for Hornet in particular, and once again phenomenal aesthetics, music, and sound design to accompany your journey.

Despite being one of the most, if not THE most, hyped indie games of all time, I was still confident that this game would meet my expectations. I am thrilled to report that instead, Silksong has somehow exceeded them.

This has to be one of my favorite puzzle games of all time; easily in the top 3!

To again reiterate what I'm sure other reviews have mentioned, this game is essentially a language-based 'rules discovery' game and as a result is best played as blindly as possible.

I also want to say that while this is a word-based game, a vast majority of the puzzles seem to have been designed with a general vocabulary in mind. In the base game, you're not going to really see that many obscure SAT-level words, so if you think this game sounds cool but are hesitant about your vocab, give it a shot! Non-native English speakers might still run into trouble from time to time but as someone who was worried about my own vocab, I didn't have issues with word knowledge for a large portion of the game.

I mentioned 'base game' above for a good reason - this game has had SEVERAL free content updates that easily double the amount of puzzles originally present. My ~61 hours at the time of review is indicative of this: this game is overflowing with content, and has a ton of high quality custom maps available as well. (Though those 61 hours is purely from what is available without any custom maps.) The dev has obviously poured a ton of work into this game and is continuing to actively do so.

I wholeheartedly recommend this game to anyone who is at least a bit intrigued by the premise; it delivers on the concept and then some. I think the only people I would not recommend this game to is those who very much dislike non-Euclidean geometry (ie, think of a circular hallway where you can never leave by turning left, but only by turning right as an example.) Navigating the areas can be fairly tricky, especially in the base game - not impossible or frustratingly so, but enough of a challenge where it may not be immediately obvious as to where to look next. (A note - the future content updates, while still keeping this feel, are definitely less so than the base game.) If you despise the feeling of being lost, this game sadly may not be for you. (If you mildly dislike the feeling of being lost, I still recommend you give it a shot!)

This is one of those games that I've ended up wishing I could play for the first time again. Figuring out each of the game's mechanics and rules was incredibly satisfying and will have you thinking about the game for some time. It's full to the brim of moments and realizations that make you feel incredibly clever when you figure them out, and rarely feel cheap. And with its updates, the game is STILL providing those incredible 'aha!' moments, even up through hour 60 of 61!

Even if you don't hunt down every last secret (and plenty of secrets there are!), the game still has plenty to offer, and in my opinion deserves to be talked about in the same breadth as games like Baba is You and Return of the Obra Dinn in terms of excellent puzzle games with unique mechanics.

Lingo might not be for everyone, but it is for me - and I give it my highest recommendation.

Some of the most fun I've had with my girlfriend in co-op in a while!
The characters are fun and unique and make for great combos with some skill.
We never had to grind to be successful, but don't mistake that for ease! Levels can get pretty challenging, so you'll need some amount of skill to be consistent, or there is always the option to grind if you need a push.

Something to be aware of, the game is let's say 70% brawler and 30% puzzle game. I for one absolutely love puzzles and riddles and had a blast with solving them, but I know it isn't for everybody. (For reference, we solved all puzzles together except one that we had to look up after misinterpreting some stuff)

Overall this game is super fun and it's a hecking shame it hasn't really gotten the attention it deserves.

As fun as the first Risk of Rain is, its sequel, in my opinion, blows it out of the water. Fun addicting gameplay that pits you against the environment in a mad arms race to see who can become an exponentially more dangerous threat faster. This game is solid on its own, and a 10/10 with friends.

You will die, and die a lot, but the grind to get better keeps you coming back for more.

This game is super fun, adorable, and relaxing! It's quite fun trying to get all the different types of slimes and their combinations with each other. I can only see good things happening in the game's development from here.
