I had the original on consoles and is a bit better than I remember now that I have all the "extra" content with it. Here is my list of pros and cons.

Pros
-Bigger character selection
-good ost
-more weapons
-story is fine
-Gauntlet mode is fine
-battlefield editor is a nice start.
-mounts can still strafe

Cons
-Crashes on occasion
-AI by default is not aggressive enough. I much preferred the DW2-3 aggression.
-Gate captains (now base) do not show up as its on icon on the map. You can also no longer clear maps as there is one checkpoint always left open and the trash that pours out of it takes your checkpoints.
-AI dies way too quick off screen regardless of difficulty (failed a stage a few times in under a minute.)
-No way to gauge morale
-battlefield editor is barebones (Tried looking for mods no luck yet.)
-long load times for an in battle cutscene
-arbitrary limit of 8 weapons a character
-No English voice acting

Overall though still a fun game, would recommend during the next sale.

I actually have not played too many empires games. I think the only one I actually played through was 4. What I was referring to was something more like dynasty warriors 3-5 where if you try to charge at the commander, it will be much harder than trying to thin them out first.

...oops, seem to have missed that you also played on console before. Still, the point that this is not one of the Empires-games still holds.

(...though I *would* like to see a WO-Empires, however that should be pulled of considering the story.)

I too think the balance was better in SW2E, but you really should be aware that this game is somewhat different...
Also, there's already WO4... and concerning the balance, it felt even easier then 3 to me, which is propably bad news for you, considering your review (4 does have a lot of improved features, though).


Also, this is a slightly improved port of an old ps4-game (ps3/xb360 for the base version) which is propably where the weapon-limit comes from (but more then 2 items would be OP).

Modding however would indeed have been a welcome addition to this PC-port... :/

Eh - you seem to have played a lot of the Empires-games and to compare this one to them, which is a bit unfitting.
Granted, I have so far only played the basic version on console, so there might be some changes I'm not aware of, though.

This not being an Empires-game, your goal is *not* to always clear the whole map, making your point with the captains a bit moot - the "Gates" are there so the game doesn't run out of opponents for you. Check your objectives to see what you need to actually do.
