Early Access Review
This game is interesting and has a lot of deep mechanics. None of it is explained and weeks later people are still trying to figure out even the most basic of ways stats effect things let alone basic mechanics. It carries the aesthetic of Cruelty Squad and nothing else aside from the obtuse nature x 1000

This isn't just "THE GAME WON'T HOLD YOUR HAND AND INJECT HAPPY JUICE INTO YOU LOSER" like a lot of reviews seem to suggest. DO NO TRY AND FIGURE IT OUT ON YOUR OWN. You won't have fun. At all. You'll just spend hours trying to work through confusing map layouts. They expect you to travel long distance where some random ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ can 1 shot you from anywhere. If you cross even a hallway without leaning, scoping, and checking every single detail you will die.

I wanted to like this so bad. Even like...a basic no frills map would be nice? I dunno I keep going back trying to have fun. I read. I try different mechanics. I still just get instantly murdered every time I try to explore. Maybe I'm just not cool enough. You need to be REALLY cool to like this game, like the kind a doctor would diagnose you for.

This is such a wonderful neat little game! I launched the game thinking I'd say a few nice things to people and exercise my writing a bit but ended up writing quite a few messages, sending out my own requests, and getting answers back in only 45 minutes! Really brightens up your day, and it's such a cool safe place to ask questions you'd be afraid to ask anywhere else.

More people need to know about this!

To make a strange comparison, this is the Oddworld Abe's Oddysey of VR games. You are small, defenseless robot thing (?) trying to escape a cold, emotionless, mechanical beast of a world that wants to see you dead at every corner. Not for those afraid of heights, this will test your VR legs.

It's atmosphere is so rad. If you like dystopian science fiction, or just strange intriguing art styles this game will pull you in like nothing else. It's VERY minimalistic but it uses it heavily to it's advantage. Think Superhot, except take it soooo much further beyond white rooms. I want to know more about this world but that would ruin what makes it great. EVERY new section the game is throwing something entirely new at you and it never stops. It's suprisingly lengthy for such a cheap VR game too.

Also like Abe's Oddysey, I absolutely loved the experiance but I could never beat it again because ♥♥♥♥ is it hard. It is physically taxing, you will sweat, you will use every ounce of your energy attempting to clear a section, and you will die and fail anyway and have to try again. But ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ is nice when you succeed. I remember clearing a certain mid game section (the main reason I will never play this again) and grasping onto the balloon carrying on me for dear ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ life, terrified of having to do it again. Sometimes the challenge is just straight up endurance.

The controls are simple, and admittedly not as polished as some other VR climbing games but they get the job done. I did run into an animation glitch with Oculus touch controllers were the hands are always orientated wrong (apparently due to how the Vive controllers naturally rest verses the touch controllers) but as far as I could tell this was only cosmetic.

With Loneliness is a unique experiance I will never forget and something that could only be done in VR. Even though I can't go back to it, at least not for a good while, it's become one of my favorite VR games, hell, just video game I've ever played. At 7 bucks you really can't go wrong.

Absolutely incredible game. Imagine Shadow of the Collossus but in first person, with grappling hooks and a hoverboard, and up the scale at least 3 times. The way the game keeps ramping up the sheer size and speed of things is incredible and the ending, despite there being very little in the way of story, feels epic and incredible. A VR must buy, assuming you have the VR legs to handle the speed and heights.

Do you like platformers? Do you like VR? Then buy this game. Don't Look Down is a really neat game brimming with content and polish. Really what we have hear is a finely tuned translation of the traditional platformer to the VR setting. Not in the sense of say Astrobot which just puts you in the game, but a game that makes YOU the platforming mascot. I couldn't get Donkey Kong Country out of my head while playing this.

I found this game kind of out of nowhere, very soon after it was released. I believe a few days after? No one was talking about it and I gave it a chance because of some positive reviews I saw on the store page. I figured I'd pass that on and leave a review myself.

Gameplay
Having played quite a few climbing VR games after this one, DLD makes me feel spoiled. This game has by far the most well tuned, accurate controls for this type of game. Unlike others, I almost never reach to grab something only to find out I didn't as I tumble to my death when I let my other hand go. I don't groan with anxiety when I have to fling myself towards something to progress, I do it for fun, to get better times, and to skip over obstacles simply because it works when I do it. I'm not saying it's perfect 100 percent of the time but deaths almost always felt like they were my own fault.

The game puts most of the mechanics on the table early on but does go on to do interesting things with them across it's 4 differently themed worlds. That's not to say new things aren't introduced as the game goes on such as enemies and level types/motifs. Rising lava, lasers, moving platforms. There are secret bonus challenges ala DKC. The usual platformer fare. It never felt like it was getting too repetitive.

It certainly DOES get difficult though. I would say it pretty steadily increases in challenge up until the end of the 3rd world in which case it ramps way up and gets a LOT harder. This is when I stopped searching for secret areas as getting to the end was enough of a challenge. If this sounds daunting to you, there are some modifiers you can put on to make the game easier, or harder, if you so desire.

That said, the power ups do a good job of making you feel, well, powered up so. If I'm having trouble with a section I often feel like I can instead play it safer in easier areas and take advantage of the jet pack, a couple well placed shots, or take a free hit with armor to progress.

There's plenty of content here. Even with all my hours I still haven't finished the final world. I'm sure skilled players could get it done in half the time but 8 hours for a VR game is pretty unheard of right now. There's also reason to go back and play it again with modifiers or to go for better times on the leaderboards. It's definitely worth the price tag.

Presentation/Music
This brings me to the weakest part of the game, the presentation. Now, I personally find it charming and it's very low hardware friendly. But, it's undeniably low fidelity. If you don't mind a cartoonish style it's far from hard on the eyes and achieves what it sets out to do so I can't really dock it too hard for that. Just don't go in expecting Robo-Recall level visuals. It's not like the devs are hiding this either as the trailer is pretty honest about what this game is about.

The music is serviceable but does get kind of repetitive (especially if you get stuck on a level) and is honestly very forgettable. It does very much remind me of 8bit MegaMan at times though which is always a plus. I honestly love the sound effects but they are very cheesey. They forlorn "wOOOoooOOOs" and "whrrrrrs" of the robots are oddly soothing. The "Ouch!" when you take damage or fall always makes me laugh and kind of takes the sting out of the failure. The little Rayman-esque musical robots in the high score menu always entertain me for at least 30-45 seconds before I move on.

Closing Thoughts

I super hope this game gets a level editor and/or some expansions in the future as even though there's plenty of content here, I can't help but want more. There are some fun options to play around with if you want to change things up for future playthroughs but nothing beats brand new content.

I've played A LOT of VR games. This is one of the best. I'd give this game an 8/10 purely on the fun factor alone, but because it has so much content I'll bump it up to a 9/10. It doesn't look like much at face value but it's actually very good. It's just really fun and polished. If you liked To the Top, With Loneliness or any VR climbing/obstacle course type game do yourself a favor and pick this up. It's totally worth it and one of my most played VR games period. I'm suprised more people aren't talking about it
