Ang "Real Emo" ay binubuo lamang ng dc Emotional Hardcore scene at the late 90's Screamo scene. Ang kilala ng "Midwest Emo" ay walang iba kundi ang Alternative Rock na may kaduda-dudang tunay na impluwensya ng emo. When people try to argue that bands like My Chemical Romance are not real emo, while saying that Sunny Day Real Estate is, I can't help not to cringe because they are as fake emo as My Chemical Romance (plus the pretentiousness). Ang tunay na emo ay tunog ENERGETIC, POWERFUL at medyo HATEFUL. Ang pekeng emo ay mahina, awa sa sarili at isang nabigong pagtatangka na idirekta ang enerhiya at damdamin sa musika. Ang ilang halimbawa ng REAL EMO ay ang Pg 99, Rites of Spring, Cap n Jazz (ang tanging tunay na emo band mula sa midwest scene) at Loma Prieta.
