As someone who never got to experience Halo's multiplayer in it's golden age, it was exciting to get a taste of it in a title that longtime fans considered to have brought the magic back (at least when it comes to the gameplay haha). I'm not here to write about the multiplayer though, it's engaging, its fun, 'nuff said.
Infinite's campaign is disappointing to say the least. I find it hard to say anything incredibly harsh about a franchise that holds such a special place in my heart, perhaps that is a weakness of mine. However, this campaign I can say feels like an afterthought to the rejuvenated gameplay sandbox of Infinite. The plot isn't even the biggest issue as I see it , as boring and unfulfilling as it is. Besides, plenty of folks have probably dissected it with more frustration and gusto than I could in a short review. With that in mind, i'll highlight something about the campaign that frustrates me to no end.
The original game that has now been out for over two decades somehow manages to have more location variety and atmosphere than a modern title. Zeta Halo as it is presented seems to have no personality. The verdant greens with scattered monoliths, outposts and wrecks aren't horrible to look at no doubt, and they definitely aren't placed without thought; yet they somehow lack substance. The lack of variety is a problem in and of itself of course, but even what we DO get feels incredibly empty. Older games had multiplayer maps fashioned after their various set pieces and locations whereas Infinite has lovely multiplayer that have absolutely nothing to do with campaign. The whole thing feels like one gigantic demo map, BUT EVEN THEN there is not atmosphere. Maybe it is a hurdle to try craft the same kind of feeling in the open world than they used to do in their meticulously crafted levels, but it hardly feels like an excuse for a well funded team working on a beloved flagship title.
I want to like it. I want to engage with it so badly. As much as enjoy the multiplayer, it disappoints me that so much more love and effort is going into that than into the singleplayer experience of Halo. I wish I could say this was wasted potential, but it's clear that these were choices and not oversights.

I enjoy it, even alone. I just wish the single-player for this game had gotten as much love as the multiplayer.

I've been sheltered from most the issues MCC has had since it's release, so i've had not time to complain and only time to submerge myself as absolutely as I can in the nostalgia pool that is this collection.
Is it even necessary to reiterate everything positive that's been said about these games over the years? The structure of the levels, the weapon sandbox, the enemies, the soundtrack; there was a time when Halo was excelling at all fronts that it aimed to excel at, a time when it was a truly innovative title. Even now, going to back to play these games that much is pretty ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ obvious.
I never even got to experience the richness of the online community these games had because of my circumstances at the time, but the love I have for this franchise will never diminish no matter how decrepit it becomes in it's old age.

The first few hours of this game felt so full of life, so inexplicably exciting; I really felt hooked. Unfortunately, the 'magic' only lasts for so long. The remainder of the game is persistently dull.
Every puzzle mechanic or setting that is briefly interesting seem to only have been used as a little feather to tickle our noses with, it's just disappointing to see the amount of obvious love that has gone into many parts of the world go to waste because this overblown officially licensed fan fiction tries to reach it's fingers into too many pies. I don't even want to really get into how uncanny it is that in spite of anything our character does in the story or side, the worst consequence you can really get is a bit of sass or a mild scolding.
Most folks probably don't expect anything mindblowing from this game, perhaps they just wanna explore the recesses of their nostalgia within the recesses of Hogwarts. This game DOES encourage exploration, and the castle truly IS beautifully made and presented. However, the way they encourage exploration is a far cry from being engaging in any sense of the word. Spamming REVELIO as I jaunt through the halls, it really takes away from much of the sense of amazement I reckon I would have if these areas were presented to us in a different context. Our introductions to the various classes of Hogwarts are an adequate example of that being done, of exploring the god forsaken castle through the inquisitive eyes of our youthful protagonist and their peers. It's a crying shame these classes are only one-offs and the rest of the game is so much more focused on other parts of the world it's a wonder that they felt the need to include the school at all.

My friends an i accidentally built a base inbetween two fronts of some kind of gang war during what i can only assume was a ceasefire. Suddenly we couldn't leave our little four story outpost because there were snipers peppered across the hills and the entire valley sounded like those newsclips from Syria. We didn't think anyone would bother a naked group with a nice pair of farting buttocks painted on the front of their house, yet not two minutes later two raunchy Russian sounding ruffians come to our door covered in armour and armed with AKs.

They proceeded to hold my pale naked character at gun point, asking to hand over any sulphur we had. We didn't have any, i told them that. He called me liar and executed me wordlessly like some NKVD officer during the Great Terror. I hoped the fueled flame turret behind our door would stop the bastards but they chucked molotovs onto the base and climbed in the gosh darned roof.

Screw all those war simulators out there, this ♥♥♥♥ will give you an intense simulation of the prejudice and poverty that you'd find in those middle school history textbooks. 6/10. Just needs a fascist party and the Gulags.

Played as soviets with my friends, we spoke in cheap Russian accents for 3 whole hours. Pretty sure my neighbours think im running a terrorist cell/socialist uprising/orgy in here.

Vodka, yes, that is my rating for this game.
