This game is a total insult to the Dragon Age franchise. I cannot believe that IGN rated this game a 9/10 (not that they're a trustworthy source anyway). This game deserves a 4.1/10 at most. An okay-ish RPG game but a horrible Dragon Age game. I'd say it's worse than Dragon Age 2, which only had 14-16 months development time.

Writing

The poor writing is the primary reason the game fails. Gameplay or graphics isn't what made this franchise special (though I will eventually get into this later on). The writing feels rushed and inconsistent. It is also excessively "modern," evident in how dialogue is delivered and how pretty much every obvious details is spoon-fed to you (NPC telling you what happened seconds after it just occured, for example). The writing reads like a subpar fanfiction you’d find on Tumblr or Discord.

Worse, the game frequently mishandles established lore, and retconning significant story elements (example being the secret post-credit scene). At least with Dragon Age Inquisiton, it made changes respectfully. This game just butchered everything.

To make matters worse, none of your previous choices matter, which is absurd. Hundreds of hours spent on previous games, only to have 3 choices, seemingly designed to cater to a specific Inquisition romance. They also obliterated the Southern region of Thedas to sort of justify this. So Hawke or HoF aren't there to help? Oh wait, they don't exist anymore. Because none of the choices we've made before MATTERED. If they're still alive, they are surely killed by the blight. How stupendous.

Dialogue

The dialogue is cringeworthy. Many have likened it to a Marvel movie, and I agree. RPGs usually evoke a intellectual, medieval-esque vibe from how NPCs communicate and articulate themselves. We can see this from Origins to DA2, and even DAI. This game, however, feels like Mass Effect: Andromeda. The humor in this game is particularly atrocious and feels overly "PG."

Witty humor has always existed in this series, back from Origins. But the jokes here lacks depth. The jokes used to be very clever and authentic. In contrast, Veilguard relies on lame one-liners, reminiscent of the modern day Marvel movies or, to some extent, DA2’s Tallis/Felicia Day debacle.

The writing also feels "safe," undermining the series’ identity. Earlier games challenged beliefs and tackled themes like politics, religion, culture, and racism. This game, however, seems sanitized, as if it’s afraid to offend. It's set in Tevinter, for God's sake. An entire country built on slavery and it cannot function without it. We literally see none of it in this game.

Companions

Companions and how you interact with them is what made Dragon Age special to me, and to most of us. In Veilguard, you can't interact with your companions unless they want something from you. While they constantly talk to each other, you're treated like an outcast. Despite this, they all inexplicably love you and one another. The approval system is pointless, serving only to level them up.

Earlier games weren't afraid to show companions disagreeing or even disliking each other (Morrigan/Alistair, Fenris/Merrill, Vivienne/Solas/Sera). They also challenged the player's beliefs and decisions, making them complex and engaging. IGN's claim that Veilguard's companions are "complex" couldn't be further from the truth. I'd dare say the companions are better in Mass Effect: Andromeda, of ALL GAMES. The only ones I found tolerable were Emmrich and Davrin, as they feel like they could belong in earlier Dragon Age games. But even they suffer due to the lack of interaction and poor overall game writing.

Oh yeah, BioWare also advertised this game as being one of their most romantic BioWare game. Yet that is not true. The romances are shallow and pale in comparison to other BioWare games.

Gameplay and RPG and Graphics

For a game marketed as an RPG game with meaningful dialogue choices, there are little to no RPG elements and none of your choices actually matters except for 3 major plot points ( Save Treviso/Minrathous, which doesn't really do much but preventing you from romancing Lucanis. Davrin or Harding to lead the offensive team and die in the process (which is lazy). Solas' fate in the end. .

The dialogue wheel is the worst in this game. They're all positive and often, your PC doesn't even say what's displayed on screen. Companions are complaining to you about something? Your PC would only respond with either "I am... so.. sorry..," "Don't beat yourself..," or "Stay strong, we need you." An NPC is being a jerk to you? Finally there's an option that says "Who the F%#$ are you?!" What's the actual response? "Who is this..?"
Even in Dragon Age: Inquisition, which I thought suffered from this, allowed your Inquisitor to literally blame your companions for their wrongdoings and make them dislike you.

The gameplay was fun initially but quickly becomes boring and repetitive. I very much prefer the old gameplay. While gameplay has never been the main focus of Dragon Age for me, it's worth mentioning since it was heavily advertised as being one of the best thing of this game. It's very basic and shouldn't have been changed.

The graphics looks amazing, I'll give them that. It's probably the only good thing about this game. I genuinely love how the world and the environment looks like. But this is hindered by the plastic-y and overly cartoonish character designs. Many of them have disproportionately large heads and look like Disney characters (looking at you Bellara and Lucanis.) Why can't they just "remaster" the character designs from Inquisition?

Take the Qunari, for example. Looked amazing in Dragon Age 2, and in Inquisiton, they were refined to look more "attractive" while still maintaining that inhuman and alien features, making them unique and distinguishable from humans. In contrast, Veilguard has reduced them to 8ft tall, overly "yassified" muscular humans with horns, looking like a discount version of Baldur's Gate 3 Tieflings.

Conclusion

I feel like this game is made for a different audience, not for loyal fans of the franchise. If you like this game, good for you. But I can speak for most fans that this isn't what a Dragon Age game should be.

Want to try this game? Not worth the full price. Wait for a sale. If you've never played a Dragon Age game before, I highly recommend starting from Origins until Inquisiton (they're all cheaper anyway).

I pray that the next Mass Effect will not suffer the same fate as Dragon Age. But it is too much to wish and BioWare should not be trusted anymore.

I remember reading the history books where the French were marching towards the Prussians while playing the Hit or Miss song.
