Treat the Prologue as a demonstration of what the game has to offer.
About the Prologue:
It contains a tutorial and one mission, which is divided in three stages.
You can play either solo or matchmaking (p2p and cross-platform).
After successfully completing the mission for the first time you'll be allowed to play as the antagonist.
You have four raiders to choose from. (additional raiders available in other adventures)
Completing Solo matches allows you to earn gold (1500 per difficult level, once per level).
Completing Matchmaking matches allows you to earn any of the three currencies or a blueprint.
Currencies are Gold, Character Points and Faction Points. Mercury points is the premium currency.
Matchmaking matches provides a 4 player co-op experience and sometimes (usually) has a 5th player - the antagonist - who will play against the other four.

Additional information:
The Antagonist has a separate ranking (which is one of the pre-requisites for unlocking weapons).
Characters have loadouts, including one weapon, one active skill and a pool/deck of character and faction passive skills. Additional passive skills can be unlocked with character or faction points.
The game has interesting and unique mechanics which deserves a topic of its own.
The game offers a 3rd person over the shoulder shooting experience. Ammo is limited and can be replenished with melee. Melee is also an effective way of taking enemies down depending on your raider's class/build. Melee works on a rock-paper-scissors system (strike beats grapple beats dodge beats strike).
The game sometimes plays like a puzzle. You have to perform certain actions in order to progress while fighting constant waves of enemies (and the occasional antagonist). The same goes to bosses. Since you can only replenish ammo meleeing enemies, expect to find them throughout boss fights.

About the game:
A western-like space opera with a colorful cast, an expansive world and a myriad of references. You can easily identify character personalities based on tropes and set your expectations accordingly. Moreover, the story so far (1st DLC) has similarly been adept of such recognizable and enjoyable writing. Additional material is available at the developer's website, including four animated comics (one for each main character).

Most negative reviews so far have concentrated on what the "reviewers" thought the game should be instead of what it is, thus demonstrating a poor management of expectations, as well as poor critical thinking and acumen.

I have had a great experience so far and I am compelled to stick around and see more. If you're feeling uneasy about this game remember that 1) the prologue is free and 2) you can buy individual adventures very cheap.

What happened to the humans?

Set in a post-apocalyptic world strewn with cast-off machines, Primordia tells the story of Horatio Nullbuilt, a stoic robot who values his solitude and independence. Horatio spends his days studying the Book of Man, sparring with his droid companion Crispin, and tinkering with the airship they call home — a peaceful existence that becomes threatened when a rogue robot steals the energy source that the pair needs to survive.
