when they advertised a 25 hour campaign, i assumed it was because there's just that much to do, not because the zones are massive and your movement speed is somewhere between "glacial" and "sluggish"

look, i was one of those people who was always complaining that PoE was too fast. i hate the flask piano, too. but goodness sake, this is not what i had in mind

i got grandfathered in for free and i still want a refund

the guffaws / minute ratio is excellent. admittedly, few things in this game cracked me up as hard as bandits suddenly calling me a tosser, or a w*nker out of nowhere.

i do wish there was more to character building, but what's there is really fun, even if unfortunately too easy to solve. but it's a proper rogue through and through, so even when you know what a nicebuild™ is, it'll still murder you if you autopilot. (this is a good thing)

i appreciate most permaprogression stuff being optional to engage with. the only one that isn't are past proof of stremfs. considering how much character progression is tied to those things, those carrying over between runs kinda goes against the whole "don't want permaprogression? then just don't use it" thing. but that's okay, because ironmans mode exists, and i'm really glad it does.

EDIT: there's an option to delete past proofs of stremf. i was wrong. sorry! continuing on

soundtrack's fantastic, but you'd expect no less from zircon.

the spritework is a joy on the eyes. easy to read, while also gorgeous and expressive.

overall, it's aite. if you like old-y rogues, you'll like dungeonmans, give it a go.

just keep in mind it's quite buggy. if you get stuck in place, often saving and exiting then reloading your save fixes it. if it's worse than that, go to the discord, the dev will fix it for you if it's something he can fix. standup guy, really.

the premier depressed lesbiab robot simulator on the market

no, not you, the villain

bit buggy in its current state, i'd wait a month or two until they polish out some oddities, but very much worth the pickup

EDIT: yeah no they ironed just about all of them out.

Prefacing this with two things:

1) The devs gave a free key to anyone who owned the original Desktop Dungeons, and that's mighty cool of them.
2) The amount of time I have in this is not representative compared to the amount of time I spent playing Desktop Dungeons in total, or the pre-release test build, and neither does my playtime in the original Desktop Dungeons, as Steam was not the primary platform on which I played it. I easily clocked in a thousand hours since 2011. I am not reviewing Rewind as a standalone game, but comparing it to what came before.

The presentation of Rewind is absolutely hideous. The original game used a wonderful, expressive hand-drawn tileset that was easy to tell apart at a glance. You could view the entire play field without problems, and you had a full overview over everything. In Rewind, that clarity goes out the window. While the user interface does technically provide you with more, and *more clear* information compared to Desktop Dungeons, it's also gigantic, hideous, lacks any charm, can't be scaled down, and worse yet, blocks the playing field. Despite Rewind being released for the PC, it looks and feels like a low-effort mobile game port. The playing field itself can't also all be viewed at once conveniently. Zooming out to be able to see the whole game field makes the 3D models of enemies difficult to distinguish from one another, and the user interface ends up blocking the upper-left corner of the field, so you need to scroll the map around to be able to see anyway. It is a pain to play, and the only environment on which I could possibly imagine wanting to play this version of the game is a phone.

I understand that a lot of the decisions made for this game were due to the problems the team created by choosing the resolution they did in 2011, and yes, the original game does have some problems relating to that. The original game is virtually unplayable on 4K monitors, etc etc. I get that. But this? This ain't it.

As it stands, there is not a single thing I like in Rewind over the original, and I cannot under any circumstance recommend it while the original is still around.

I'm sorry.

star valor is an acceptable space video game

while there are a handful of gameplay features that are sorely missing, every single one of the ones i can think of are already on Laious' roadmap, and i've seen enough of this game's development during early access to know that he will stick to it, so there's not even much of a point in bringing it up in a review.

what's there is incredibly solid, and i've already put 100+ hours into it at the time of this review, and i continue coming back. it's a very comfy game.

on the note of the developer: he is incredibly active in the game's discord, and regularly takes feedback and criticism. by "regularly", i mean the madman actually reads every single post in the #suggestions channel, and makes it a point to respond to them (at the bare minimum an emoji react, but often a direct reply). this is this guy's passion project, and it very clearly shows with how much he cares for it to be the best it can get, and that alone, i think, is worth the asking price.

star valor is an acceptable space video game, and i think you should give it a go if you find space video games acceptable.
