TL;DR: Digital speed. It has a free demo. It is on Xbox Game Pass. Try it, love it, buy it.

The only roguelite I’ve ever really enjoyed has been Vampire Survivors, which I’ve often seen referred to as ‘digital crack’.

Well, if VS is digital crack, then Roboquest is digital speed.

Roboquest mixes frenzied run ‘n’ gun gameplay with extremely enjoyable movement and a deep selection of weapons and upgrades available for obsessively tweaking the perfect build.

The wide variety of guns ensures you can always try something else if you’re bored of a weapon, although I have my favorites (scout sniper <3). The pocket reload mechanic, time-graded levels, and Doom Eternal-esque health pickup system favor fast-paced gameplay, which goes hand in hand with the frenetic movement system.

Sliding, slide jumping, double jumping, rails (think Sunset Overdrive), and a gamut of unlockable movement items make movement a dream in this game. I haven’t enjoyed traversing a game world this much since playing Ghostrunner, whose gameplay focuses entirely on its parkour. Not to mention how fun it is to headbonk (goomba stomp) robots.

What ties this addictive loop together are the roguelite meta-progression and the upgrade system, the latter of which also levels the playing field when it comes to gameplay. The game heavily favors skilled twitch shooting with its critical system and fast-paced nature, but you can’t breeze through the game on aiming skills alone. You need to craft a well-thought-out build if you want to beat the game on higher difficulties with S-tier time, but at the same time, the game allows you to experiment with unorthodox builds and weapons (e.g. shovel only). Still, the game requires more skill and engagement than a game like Vampire Survivors, where at a certain point in your build you just watch numbers go up while hitting WASD randomly (which, to be fair, is also very dopamine producing, hence ‘digital crack’).

I’ve played other roguelite shooters like Risk of Rain 2, but they did not draw me in as much as Roboquest has. I’ve just started the game, and instead of focusing on beating it with my favorite build (Ranger/crit/ricochet OP) I’ve been distracted by finding secrets, trying out different builds and weapons, seeing what cool builds other players have beat the game with, and of course, slide jumping through levels like a robotic phoon.

I do wish some parts of the progression weren’t gated behind secrets, because I feel like if I haven’t found them at a certain point, I’m handicapping myself. Other than that, I purchased it on release and the game has run great, I’ve experienced no bugs, the soundtrack is awesome, and I find the cartoony cel-shaded art style very endearing (the little 2D animated cutscenes that play with each new level are very cool too). Mix this with the addictive nature of both the gameplay and the ‘one more run’ roguelite meta-progression, and you have a gem on your hands. Can’t wait to eventually beat it on Guardian IV, and I’m hoping there’s DLC, a sequel, or any form of Roboquest content announced in the future, although this game will keep me very busy in the meantime.

Oh, and there’s coop too so you can even play with your brobots!
