I've played the entire franchise since it first came out, graphics and diversity just keep on improving! you have the choice of auto-combat or personally control your troops during an encounter, many different races with unique racial traits and units, it will take a bit to learn the game - recommend completing campaign before you launch multiplayer - you need to have a basic idea of all the troops, not only can you build your cities, and manage them you also have "magic" ready to cast once skills have been researched, - leads to a fairly complicated strategic game that will entertain hours on end :D
