War is hell.

Yet we all make our choices. Where Coppola put Heart of Darkness into the Vietnam war era, Williams puts it into modern day Dubai. This game is not your average shooter. As with most story-driven games I do not care much for gameplay - which is average, yet solid - or visuals - which are mostly good; there are lots of contrasts here: from bright desert day in Dubai to darker scenes which look far better in my opinion. The voice acting is phenomenal, the sound design is theatrical right along with the soundtrack which makes you feel like you're "playing" Apocalypse Now. You will likely feel the urge to complete the story in an uninterrupted playthrough.

What many negative reviewers failed to notice is that the game leaves you the option to quit playing at any time - right to the very end. It's main reasoning is proved by the vast majority of players not quitting despite all the choices they have made and even despite all the points where it's the only alternative to the events unfolding. There is no Kurtz eerily whispering "The horror! The horror!" here, but the early "Death toll: too many" which is ironically reprised in one of the possible endings mocks us for not stopping earlier just the same.

I suppose The Line has it's shortcomings in multiplayer though I wager it was never really intended for that. Aside from the lackluster MP the game is remarkably bug-free and runs with a stability that is sadly uncommon nowadays.

Spec Ops: The Line makes for an extraordinary shooter that will stay with me for a long time and certainly come to mind whenever I think of Heart of Darkness or Apocalypse Now. Yet it is even more: a compelling argument for peace.
