This is a game that gets a surprising amount of fun and mileage out of what would be predictable tropes. It's fun being the villain, kidnapping princesses and pounding good guys in your mechanical menaces. But it also has heart to it, that goes beyond just nods toward classic gaming tropes. The artwork is really well done (bonus points for using hand-drawn art instead of going the lazy retro pixel route) and the music is really catchy.

It's not a perfect game; the difficulty curve is a bit wonky, there are bugs, and there are a few places lacking the polish you'd expect from a professional creation. But this wasn't a professional creation; it was a labour of love, and it shows. It's well worth looking into, for the platform lovers and the trope-savvy alike.
