Note: I am specificaly not using any mods for the purposes of critique, playing the game as intended as this is what I have paid for.

I am largely a builder in Fallout 4 as god knows the rest of the game is complete garbage wearing Fallout's skinsuit as a disguise, so I was pretty damned hyped for this DLC. I already like building settlements (as hellishly limited as they are) in Fallout 4, and the ability to build vaults?! Excellent! Can't wait!
Then I discover that the game is -still- hampered by the incredibly low building limits even though literally no one on Steam is running on a PS4 or Xbone so what actual reason is there to limit us to such a tiny amount of building that if you want to put any sort of detail into the vault and not leaving it as a barron shell then you have to sacrifice 3/4 of the vault.
On top of this immediate annoyance they didn't even let you connect one of the 4 building areas to the rest of the vault! From the main area there is a train tunnel leading down which is big enough to hold some vault in, but it is put off center the exact amount to mean that it is physically impossible to link a big stairway down to a large building area up to your vault. Some level designer clearly went out of their way to make it impossible to use all of the building area provided to build one continuous vault which is a pointless limitation that does nothing but frustrate people who want to maybe BUILD A VAULT.
Next on the list is the actual dungeoneering. Now this is one of the better designed dungeons in the game, even though it is still shallow and simple, it actually interconnects with other parts of itself and has several dead ends, which is a nice little dungeon at maybe a beginner level designer's skill. On a more positive note, the dungeon has a lot of "secret" areas that can only be accessed by scrapping walls in the workshop mode. Wow! Bethesda actually using its different game mechanics together in interesting ways! First time they've done this in 2 decades, nice work!
But a giant problem with this dungeon in a building DLC. There is still no way to get rid of bodies. None at all. Some bodies disappear after a certain amount of in game time, some just don't. This would almost be find if you could drag every body out to the vault entrance like I did with the ghouls, buuuuut they have a deathclaw, many radscorpions and a mirelurk queen so that renders all of those areas anywhere between completely and mostly useless until the game decides that you are allowed to be graced with those corpses disappearing. It would not actually be hard to add a feature that lets you just scrap the bodies or harvest them for all their meat, bones and skin, leaving nothing left or adding a grinder or any number of ways that modders came up with 7 months ago or maybe a new, creative idea like what they are paying their employees to come up with (in theory).
I would like to once again mention the crippling build limit, seriously you can't even have a small vault with the detail of vault 111 which was tiny and had very little in it so you have to chose to either have an empty vault or a tiny vault, both of which are completely against the spirit of a creative building DLC. This is a problem the entire game has had since launch and seems to solely exist for parity with consoles. (If they were worried about people with low end PCs they would simply add a slider in the graphics settings to change the limit. Surely they can't have overlooked an idea so obvious and simple, right?)
Of course the 20ish settler limit also makes the vault seem completely dead, since the size of the build area is very large and you have very few people to fill it with.
On the subject of people, the experiments.
Oh, boy, the experiments.
They are, as expected, completely boring, uninspired, at best ripped off from Obsidians far more active and creative designers and I would honestly not even call them experiments. So if you were looking forward to conducting your vault-tech vault as if it were a vault-tech vault, dismiss those hopes.
The quest is almost completely redundant, it's just a way to slowly guide the player into unlocking all the different parts of the DLC. It is nothing else. It is just a hollow character story line that does nothing but be a tutorial. It doesn't even vaguely try to be more and is completely forgettable and Bethesda should be embarrassed for even considering advertising the quest as a feature.
Lastly, of course, the actual building items are almost entirely objects that were already in the game and so have been in mods for the best part of half a year. There is almost nothing original in this DLC except for the dungeon.

In conclusion, unless you have the season pass, avoid this DLC. Even if you love settlements and building them, the DLC is more parts frustration with issues in the game that have been glaring yet unfixed since release than it is building. It is terribly designed, clearly rushed together and massively, massively overpriced considering how much of an unbelievable abortion it turned out to be.

And the worst part? It was so close. Even though everything is already a mod, even though the base games limitations hit this DLC like a truck in France, even though the quest is basically non existent, this DLC was so, so close to making me like it. All they had to do was be less lazy and actually spend 20 minutes designing a game instead of rolling in all the cash they make off the Fallout hype train.
So here's to another month until the next massive disappointment where Bethesda completely screw up the idea of raiders and theme parks.

Pretty much your generic modern survival game à la Rust and Ark: Survival Evolved. This game's unique spin on the formula is that the enemies are harder to defeat (Along with a pleasing fantasy aesthetic). The problem with this is that the combat system is the same hold down left click to vaguely flail at things in front of you system of this game's influences, meaning that the actual skill in the harder combat feels like is still exactly the same.
I did go in to this game after reading many reviews praising the game greatly, which may have given me some unfair expectations, but all in all I left the game unsatisfied.
Otherwise it seems like a pretty solid addition to the survival genre, but if you aren't already sold on these games this will certainly not change your mind.

As a forward, the majority of reviews I see here seem to be complaining about the fact that this pack didn't include the Overkill pack and that they were led to thinking it would.
If you actually are a big enough fan of Payday 2 and/or Overkill, chances are you were following the release of this and the hypetrain, in which case you knew exactly what this pack was weeks ago as they had said many, many times that this pack did not include the Overkill pack.
Now to the real review

THIS IS NOT A DLC YOU IDIOTS, IT IS A DONATION THAT HAPPENS TO GIVE YOU MASKS

I can't recommend it because you really have to be a fan of the game and the developer enough to want to give them £15
Don't complain about the masks because this ISNT A MASK PACK, IT IS A DONATION
If you were misled by the name then you deserve to lose money because you just burned £15 on a DLC you didn't read anything about.
Also them releasing the DLC early to prevent preorders was a pretty evil move. But again, if you bought this before actually reading anything about it, you probably should lose the money, if only to teach you not to do it again.
