You read the description, you think: "Oh alright it is going to have some pretty tough puzzles but it is a 2D slasher RPG/Metroid thing...I'll eventually fight my way through.

NO.

NO.

You will die, you will be lost for ages. You will forget which way is up, what progress feels like, and dream of air control when jumping straight up. I played this game for 40+ hours, WITHOUT using a guide once. I eventually broke down and looked up the very next step I had to take. After that, I progressed and got stuck AGAIN. Looked up the guide for one more push and got stuck AGAIN. I felt defeated as when I found something out and moved forward, I would be stuck for another countless amount of hours.

I challenge anyone who reads this and hasn't played the game: Attempt the game without using a guide for as long as you can and truly feel what is is like to be helpless. I say to you, as a gamer this:

I personally believe one CANNOT beat this game without ever using a guide for assistance no matter how small the step.

The music, presentation, pull, exploration is top notch however! Buy this ♥♥♥♥ and experience utter hell (And maybe some enjoyment)

Think Chaos Theory + Conviction only it is more like 70% Conviction and 30% Classic.

Still, this game really suprised me with the loads of side content there is to do. The main missions vary in length depending on if you go guns blazing or stealth and have a great amount of variety when it comes to environments. Missions generally involved getting from Point A to Point B and stealth boils down to hiding around corners/chest high walls, or finding a secret path that circumvents traditional paths.

Playing on Perfectionst (Highest difficulty) from the start proved to be just right when playing stealthly. Hostiles are very alert and can catch wind of you if you are in sight in about 1-2 seconds. Lower difficulties will allow you to see through walls, mark and execute (from Conviction) and re-supply at checkpoints.

I can only comment on the Co-op portion of the multiplayer as I have yet to try Spies vs Mercs. The side missions allow for a Co-op partner to play alongside you and the experience is quite enjoyable. There are some gimmick co-op style moves that can be done but it is mainly only for progression. The most satisfying experiences are when both teammates sync up and perform take outs fluidly. The actual servers and latency are generally fine but I have had too many issues with the game soft crashing in long On-line sessions.

I can recommend Splinter Cell: Blacklist at its current $30 price range for anyone who is a fan of previous Splinter Cells (Especially Conviction) or stealth games in general.

First off, if you played the classic and metroid style castlevanias and are interested in this game based on that fact - Don't. This is a seperate story, reimagining. There isn't really much Castlevaina from this game. Think of it more as a "Insert-God of War/Devil May Cry - simple combo fighting - adventure game" with a Van Helsing flair.

You play as Gabriel Belmont (Oh so it is Castelvaina!) who is sent on a mission by his holy brotherhood to find out why the world sucks so much. The story is divided into cutscenes (cinematic and in-game) throughout the levels and push the story well enough. It's nothing earth shattering so don't expect too much. I appreciate that there is a voice-over for every single new level (There are good amount of levels) and some cutscenes are fairly lengthy and have a lot of depth to them. The meat of Lords of Shadow (LoS) is the gameplay of course. You have a combat cross (Chaos Blades) that has a whip extension that allows you to attack enemies from varying distances. One button does quick direct attacks and another does area type. You can dodge, jump, and move freely during combat. Shortly into the game, you'll be given the ability to use Light Magic and Shadow Magic. These are activated via two seperate buttons and allow for your sub-weapons (Oh man, it is totally Castlevaina!) to be imbued with different effects. Light magic restores your health on each hit, while Shadow generally does higher damage. Since it follows in the GoW concept more than anything, you will have to perform Quick Time Events (QTEs) *Lightning strikes* ALL THE TIME, EVERY LEVEL, EVERY 3 MINUTEs, FOREVER.

I have never seen so many QTEs in a game before. Almost every grab attack involves one, mini-bosses involve at least two, and major bosses can have up to ten! These QTEs vary from Rotating the control stick, push any button when the white circles intersect, and mash button for gameplay! It would have been just as satisfying to have Gabriel do the actions as a cutscene since that's 90% what it is anyway. I made this an entire section of this review because it is absurd to the point of hilarity how many button mashes and suprise cut-scene inputs there are in this game.

With that out of the way, I can say this game is actually quite enjoyable! The first two hours (This is a 20+ hour game!) start out slow but once you have both magics, the game starts to pick up. Hand holding is present throughout your entire experience so you'll never be lost for too long...which can be both a blessing and a curse (more so a curse) but the amount of varitey the levels provide more than makes up for the short comings. EVERY level has something unique. Every level felt like a new experience...with being a linear game that's pretty impressive. One stage may have you ride horse back on a spirtial horse, while another has you fighting a wall crushing orge. Another may have you subdue a giant spider to create web bridges to proceed, while the next has you scaling a gargantuan stone titan Shadow of the Colussus style. The game looks great too with great lightning to capture the atmosphere and glorious vistas to gaze upon. It is a shame that the linear nature reminds you are in a game as seemable areas that you could jump to or run up to will be inivsible barriers. The game isn't entirely easy either. I played on the hardest difficulty availabe for a first playthrough (So the second highest) and had some trouble spots. Still, I would say any lower would make the game a push-over.

Other than combat, you'll also encounter some ledge hoping and grapple hook swinging and even some puzzles. As expected, the parkour stuff is brain dead with push jump when you reach the edge and the puzzles are for the majority require no brain activity save for a few which may require a brain twitch. Most puzzles seem like filler to pace the action and never make you feel good about yourself (or at least they shouldn't.) Lastly, you gain experience points when you kill monsters and solve puzzles without unlocking their solutions which can be used to buy extra moves for your magics and base attacks.

So is there any castlevaina to be found? Yes, I enjoyed the 3 chapter spanning reimaging of Dracula's Castle which made you feel at home again. Also there are some back tracking options to grab some upgrades for your sub-weapons which require you to usually beat a major boss to unlock the ablity to do so. I can count on both hands the amount of back-tracking that is involved.

Being the Ultimate edition, you get the 2 DLCs that came out. They act as an epilogue of sorts and I find they detract from the actual core story. The first DLC is mindless puzzles and the second is a big minigame with a boss. Spoilers: You use QTEs to defeat him.

There is always more to say about that game, but I can recommended this game at it's full price if you are interested in a lengthy adventure beat-em up game. For those on the fence due to the branding of Castlevaina, I would advise checking a Let's Play or the like first.

I saw this one sale for around 0.35 I think? I bought it because it looked fun for 35 cents. I was right.

The game is 2 levels, with a third acting as a boss. You left click to shoot your bullet hell at the baddies (There is about 6 types of baddies) and push A or D to shift between one of two points to avoid attacks. You can also press W to jump to dodge when rolling isn't an option. If you shoot up the gold baddies you'll get a part of a CD which you can use to create a full CD that can be chosen as the music playing. Not only that but these grant passively abilities to your V for vendetta-esque character. Ablities like a charge attack or maybe better awareness of where enemies are.

It's a fun game, but I am done with it. After you beat the story mode you unlock endless mode and time attack which can extend the game. You can also go for achievments if that is your thing and it would be probably be worth $2 then but if you are are on the fence wait for that sub 1 dollar sale!

Metroidvaina + Castle Crashers with just a dash of Super Meat Boy! = Guacamelee!

I purchased this game as soon as I saw that Metroidvaina was the general design of the game. I intended to test it out when I installed but ended up playing for 3 straight hours.

You'll play as Juan who dons the mask of legacy and becomes the Luchador. The game is filled with Mexican culture with modern internet-isms (memes as well) masked throughout. Don't let that push you away however, seeing iconic internet..uhh things in the game actually provide a bit of subjective art as I felt more connected as if the developers are one of us who are playing.

The controls are extremely fluid, with the ability to cancel out of any action with an air or ground dodge and the combat has just as much flow. You do a regular melee attack that can combo up to 3 hits with cardinal directional moves depending on if you are in the air or ground. Add another button dedicated to Special moves also with 4 directions of variety and you got a simplistic yet intricate combat system. Oh you can also toss opponents across the arena and into other skeletal hombres.

The exploration aspect is top notch with nook and crannys begging to be searched. You'll find places you can't reach due to some obstruction and be rewarded if you remember later down the road. At one point in the game, you'll have the power to switch from the light world to the dead world with platforming and combat creatively incoporated. While some secrets are obvious, you'll need to put on your master explorer hat to find everything Gucamelee! has to offer. The difficulty is just right, with the enemies requiring more finesse and the platforming demanding 2 or 3 actions in short time. For the daring, to 100% the game, Guacamelee! demands you to channel your inner Super Meat Boy and do some sadistc platforming challenges.

The soundtrack is fantastic with each area giving you a different Mexcian vibe. I always enjoyed hearing all of the pieces each and everytime I entered an area.

You can even have local 2 player coop!

There is a ton to say about Guacamelee! but I think you should save it for yourself. I personally recommend this game to anyone who enjoys beat-em ups/platformers/and exploration adventures (Castle Crashers, Metroid, Castlevaina, Super Meat Boy)

To fully complete the game (100% completion including Steam Achievements) I clocked in at about 10 hours.

Guacamelee!

If you enjoy the 2D Metroids and the SotN/Gameboy Advanced Castlevanias, then you are going to fall in love with Valdis Story: Abyssal City. Given life through Kickstarter, the Devs really created something special which will certainly provide you with a longing for more.

With 4 difficulties and 2 characters to choose from right off the bat, the option of choice is quickly acknowledged. Play as hardened warrior Wyatt or the swift monk Reina in an Atlantis-esque landscape where Angels and Demons fight for control. All the while a neutral party has appeared, fearls...neither Light or Dark have become to run rampant in the underwater world and has been causing townsfolk to be wary of strangers. As Wyatt or Reina explore the world, you'll slowly uncover why this abyssal city has become a battle ground of the gods.

At its core, Valdis Story can be described as a Tactical Hack n' Slash RPG. Combat being the main focus, involves a light attack and heavy attack with combos being performed as multiple inputs are given. Combined with the ability to strike in the air, cancel your animation in order to seamlessly meld into another combo, and cast 4 different types of magic, one can imagine the styling of Valdis Story's combat can be quite the visual. The game may be overwhelming at first due to the immense amount of status effects, buffs, and items...but soon transforms into a short but dense experience like no other.

The art style is fantastic and the environments each have their own unique spin. The combat, spells, and animations are all top notch and fit the mood of the locale perfectly. The soundtrack is on the same level as the rest of the game as I found myself just leaving the game paused and taking in the hauntingly lulling pieces.

Some aspects may appear frustrating such as some timed platforming and I would have liked to see the character change in appearance depending on what armor is worn but that is completely understandable considering the the dev team makes up less room than a nuclear family.

I could go on but hopefully you can see why this is a must own game if you enjoy Hack n' Slash/RPG/2D Exploration games and if you long to play another Castleroid then this is close as you'll get!

I don't care...I like this game. Don't let the anime pink cat girl fool you, this game is fun. It has scramble-style exploration meaning you can see the path to go but you can branch off getting secrets all the time. This is mainly due to the fact you can climb on walls and ceilings at any point. I'd wait for a sale if you are on the fence though.
