Early Access Review
So... The sequel to come, recent update has dropped and now I've bought the game outright to play beyond the Free Weekend. How good is this game?

Very good, actually. The melee combat feels smooth and responsive, I feel like It's actually my fault for whiffing or being too aggro with my attacks, and it heavily rewards team play above all else. Despite its early access release, this game already has a generally good core gameplay loop, although with loose handholding. Check your objectives watch often.

If and when you do die, you lose your character. It's the kinda permadeath action you'd expect from a hardcore game like this, but some other people may get turned off by this fact. Me personally though, I'm the kinda guy who wants to use all my resources, I want to build myself up from nothing and extract with some good kit. Just keep in mind that you don't get to keep anything between missions, and if you're infected and extract, you'll start the next mission healthy.

The content currently available right now is... Adequate. Nothing is missing that should otherwise be here. You've got consumables, placeables, ammo and firearms, though the selection of guns and melee could be broader... It's simply adequate for now. Keep in mind this game is still in active development, so I won't ding them for this.

The maps don't exactly feel copy/pasted like some other games. By that I mean, the buildings feel uniquely designed, and there's even a few cases where I've found first aid kits on the walls where others may have missed them. Like those fire extinguisher wall slots in the real world. I will say though, zombies tend to come out of nowhere a lot of the time. If you clear a room, expect there to be more in there when you come back, even on the second floor of a house. The game likes to spawn them in when nobody's looking, and sometimes they'll even dig themselves out of the ground nearby you so you either have to fight or flee. Again, game's a work in progress, they're likely to fine tune it given enough time.

The one big gripe I have with the game right now though, is the performance. It's absolute cheeks at times, and tends to crap out on me at the worst times imaginable. I've got the unfair lag death tally up to 6 right now, only made worse with the fact that It's inconsistent at best. There's almost no way to remedy it beyond simply getting a better computer. I tried the steam launch settings to set it up better. I tried limiting processes active while playing the game to free up resources. I even tried going into task manager to set the program priority to realtime, only to get blocked by the kernel level anticheat saying I can't do that.

With all of the above in mind... Yes, this game is good. It might not have what you want for the time being, might be a bit too hard for you to handle, but It's slowly yet surely getting better. The game is not meant to be played solo, as It's designed and based around the fact you die easy alone, but become strong with others. Me personally though, I'm keeping this game entirely uninstalled till they optimize it enough to where I don't lag out so badly that I freeze for 7 seconds straight while surrounded by zombies.

TLDR; Game is good, and is difficult, but has poor performance.

At least Diablo 3 on Nintendo Switch never crashed or disconnected me for no reason. I'd get a refund if I could.
