I recommend this game, but there are lot of disclaimers to note:

1. There is a STEEP learning curve to the game, and there isn't a good tutorial in-game.

2. While there are a few good guys who don't mind helping out a noob, the vast majority of the community will view you as prey to get an easy win. Proof? Create a multiplayer game, title it noobs only, the first 3 people will be level 15+, and won't even apologize that they tried to take advantage of you being a beginner for an easy win.

3. Lots of battles are won or lost within the first 5 mins. These are 20 minute battles, mind, so there's a good chance that you will be on cruise control for 15 minutes of it.

4. Artillery units are overpowered as of now, and matches could boil down to people just shelling the crap out of each other for 10 mins.

Now why do I recommend the game?

1. There's no other game like it. It is like Total War on steroids, every unit has a counter-unit...It is the very basis of strategic thinking.

2. Once you get over the big hump of learning the game, it is quite a lot of fun...unless you match up with one of the vast number of people who are diehard followers of the game and know every key-binding and inch of the map in the back of their head.

3. There is a HUGE amount of units to select, granted some may be the exact same (but made available for different countries) but in general, you can browse through each unit with a very detailed model to boot for a while.

4. Like I mentioned, there are hidden gems in the community, and some of them have written up some very comprehensive guides for the game. Whether you want to read through a 200 and 180 page guide for a game is a whole different question altogether though.
