This might actually be the best game you could possibly play on a Steam Deck. Incredibly addicting and the time flies by, getting you through the boring monotonous putrid moments of your life, such as at airports, on flights, or basically just whenever you have time to kill.

I love capybara

If I could leave a 'mixed' review, I would. But I think this game definitely has to lean into a negative review from me.

I loved the first part of the remake, so really wasn't expecting this to disappoint me so much.

Let's get the good out of the way: There are some very good, memorable moments. The characters are great, as usual, as is the OST and the visuals. The combat & gameplay is very smooth with some additional improvements from the first game.

By no means was the core of the game the problem for me. I enjoyed the gameplay for almost the entire duration of the game.

Here are my main problems with Rebirth:

  1. There is an absolutely RIDICULOUS amount of side content. While that may not sound like a bad thing at first, quite often a lot of the side content is somewhat mandatory if you want to get certain materia, certain perks (such as mounts), as well as increasing the party's level so that you can access more powerful abilities later on. Some of the side quests are decent and not unenjoyable, but the majority of the side content is just the same recycled crap over and over again, and oh my god if I have to hear that little mf Chadley's voice one more time I will actually explode.

Quality > Quantity always. Stop adding a bunch of stuff that isn't fun or doesn't add anything of significance.

  2. There are so many minigames that have been forced into the main story. Seriously. Like what's the point in making Queen's Blood optional if you're just going to force me into learning how to play it many hours into the game anyway? I think you can forfeit it, but again, it feels forced because it affects your relationship with your team.

Without spoiling anything, there is an entire mini-dungeon where you play as a particular character in which the entire dungeon is basically throwing boxes at buttons. It is mind numbingly boring and I really can't understand how the devs have made some of these sections and thought they were fun.

  3. Many parts of the story make literally no sense at all. I haven't played the original game, and maybe that's my problem, though many people seem to insist It's fine to play these games without prior knowledge of the OG. The first game - while there was some gaps in my knowledge, the story and plot wasn't that hard to follow, and while there were some mysteries and some questions that remained unanswered, It made sense since it was just part one of three.

In rebirth, however? Take that initial confusion from the first game, then add in multiple timelines playing out simultaneously, in which some characters are alive in certain timelines, but not alive in other timelines, and it becomes such a mess that's so hard to follow. I mean I'm literally two full length games into this remake now and I feel like the plot is advancing so unbearably slowly. There's basically some mini-games or some social sim segments followed by a tiny story relevation. The pacing has been abysmal considering the original was what, a 30-35 hour game?

  4. Again, no spoilers here, but I have to talk about the final boss fight, which must have had a dozen or so stages (I am not exaggerating here) It was so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ long and drawn out for no reason. Thank god they made it so that you can restart between each stage if you died, but even then you have to sit through and watch all the UNSKIPPABLE cutscenes play out over and over again. Once you finally get to the final stage of the fight, the BS continues with an ability that reduces your entire teams HP to 1, and a ridiculously OP attack at about 10% HP in which you will die within a matter of seconds if you don't stagger the boss. This wasn't too hard to tackle after deciding to save up limit breaks and as much burst damage as I possibly can, but for the love of christ, the last thing players want after enduring an hour long boss fight is to get hit with some BS mechanics like that. The final boss fight in the first game was fine. This one was just needlessly long and annoying.

TLDR

At It's core, the game is fine and has some improvements from the first, but the plot and story is so convoluted if you haven't played the original game, with a bunch of recycled side content, forced unfun minigames into the main story, horrific boss design (particularly the final boss). This game does not respect the players time whatsoever.

I'll still be playing part 3 since I'm kinda locked in now, but It's gonna take a lot to make up for this mess.

I came into this game with zero expectations due to all of the negativity I had read online over the years, long before this game was even available on PC. This title is very divisive and some people will like it, some people won't. I think this game is a solid 8/10, but definitely not up there with the 'Best of all times'

While I can totally understand why some people wouldn't like the direction that this game goes, I personally think It's very over-hated, so this review is going to be focusing on all of the positives:

  • Gameplay is significantly better than Part 1, with more creativity when it comes to combat options.
  • Graphics are incredible, noticeably better than Part 1.
  • Many new characters, and a stronger focus on narrative.
  • Multiple new enemy types to figure out how to counter.
  • Feels realistic to play - Everything you do in the game feels like it has weight to it.
  • Open-world elements, which I personally love as I like exploration in games.

Again, far from a perfect game, but I would encourage you to try it for yourself and form your own opinion rather than being put off by negativity from others.

This game is absolutely fantastic. While I didn't like the story pacing at parts, the combat is incredibly satisfying, the soundtrack is phenomenal, and the visuals & atmosphere are top notch.

I've never seen any of the movies, and I don't think I've even watched any marvel movie in general, but this game is really good.

Fun and innovative gameplay that forces you to use the entire team, with a banger soundtrack and well-written story. Oh, and a space llama. What's not to love?

The narrative and characters of this game are top-notch, but I personally feel like there's just far too many puzzles and it ruins the pacing. If you like story-focused RPG's and don't mind puzzles, you should definitely play this

I love you Falcom, but the boss design in this game is one of the worst I've ever seen, and that's a fact. A Dark Fact.

I was under the initial impression that Ys is basically just Trails but without a strong focus on narrative, and more about the gameplay. While It's true that the gameplay is the core of this game, I was actually pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed the story & characters, particularly in the latter parts of the game.

Will definitely be trying some of the other titles out, and would certainly recommend this game to anybody. Solid combat, story, writing and characters. Considering the entire game takes place on a deserted island, it never bored me once.

P.S - Little Paro best bird

This is, somehow, simultaneously the most boring, repetitive, toxic, annoying, frustrating, stressful, unbalanced, unfair, inhumane, diabolical multiplayer game I've played in my entire life.
